Thomas Hofeling Obituary

Thomas Dale Hofeling

1932 - 2025

Thomas Dale Hofeling, a devoted husband, exemplary father, and loving grandpa, passed away on February 18, 2025, at his residence in South Jordan at the age of 92. He was born on April 3, 1932, in Murray, Utah, to Thomas F. and Leah J. Hofeling, as the eldest of seven children.

Tom completed his education at Murray High School. After his graduation, he served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, serving four years during the Korean War. Tom earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education, followed by a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah. He taught at Murray High School, Hillcrest Jr. High School, and was a teacher/counselor at Riverview Jr. High School. While at Riverview, he worked with Aleen Phinney to develop the Hofeling-Phinney Method of Standard Grading. In addition to his significant roles as an educator and school counselor, Tom held the position of President of the Murray School District Credit Union for over 30 years, was President of the Murray Education Association, and was appointed for a term as Justice of the Peace.

Known for his ability to forge lasting friendships, Tom leaves behind a legacy of cherished relationships and fond memories. He stayed in contact with high school friends, military friends, and coworkers his entire life.

Tom was also an educator at home. He was always sharing news stories, personal stories, and history with his children and grandchildren. He loved to read, sing songs, and recite poetry. One of his favorite activities was taking his children and grandchildren fishing.

Tom married Joyce Mortenson on August 6, 1952, in the Salt Lake Temple. They met in first grade and began dating in high school, sharing 72 years together and displaying their affection until the very end by kissing and holding hands daily.

Tom is survived by his wife, Joyce, their children: Stephanie Hofeling, Elizabeth H. Wall (Craig), and Jocelyn H. Brown (Blair), as well as daughter-in-law Kris M. Hofeling Carpenter (Jay), six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. His brothers: Marvin Blaine Hofeling, Allen Ross Hofeling, and John Martin Hofeling. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son: Thomas Erick Hofeling, sister: Arlene McCleary, brothers: Richard Lee Hofeling and Melvin Craig Hofeling, and great-granddaughter: Julia Hobbs.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Murray City Cemetery, 5490 Vine Street, Murray, UT. Online condolences may be shared at www.jenkins-soffe.com.

Riverview Jr. High, my 9th grade year. I owe so much to Mr. Hofeling. I behaved very poorly in my music class and the teacher sent me to the principle. Mr. Hofeling, the asst. principle, met me in the hallway and lifted me off the ground and put me up against the wall. He 'advised' me to apologize to the music teacher. I have not treated a teacher or a leader with that type of behavior again. I have told this story more than a few times- and the feeling I had with Mr. Hofeling was he cared for me. Jay Nielsen

Tom Hofeling was a wonderful teacher. I had the opportunity to have been taught also by his wonderful wife Joyce. They both put their heart and soul into teaching. Also grateful to have felt their kindness. Truly wonderful people. Condolences to dear Joyce.
