As a wildlife biologist with the Bureau of Land Management in Utah through the 1970's, i listened to Tom at several wildlife functions where he had been invited to address wildlife interactions with public expansion. It was always a pleasure!

I met Tom when he wrote a story about my work as the architectural historian for UDOT. My email signature caught his eye when I responded to one of his articles about local hamburger joints and I told him about the best piece of pie I ever had (Dell's Calf-A in Dell, Montana--pop. 35). Our interview was the most wonderful conversation, during which we not only talked about my work at UDOT but also discussed growing up in SLC, our Catholic faith, and his first wife Gayen's involvement on the Sugar House Community Council. When the article was published, UDOT's director sent me a nice message thanking me for giving the agency a personal image, but this was due to Tom's ability to draw the best from his subjects and his stellar writing.
Long before we met, however, I enjoyed and looked forward to his feature articles. He stood up for state parks when they were on the budgetary chopping block, pointing out that even those that didn't enjoy much attendance were often the only recreational opportunities rural communities had. I loved his article about working at the Iceberg in high school and how the owner allowed him to leave his shift early to cover a sports event. The article that really sticks in my mind was his tribute to Gayen and their marriage after she passed away -- it was so heartfelt and moving.
To his family I want to express my deepest condolences. Your father and husband was a treasure and had a gracious soul. I wish you the best.

Oh Tom, I spent many many weekends babysitting Emma and the twins, and loved every minute of my time with you, Gaylen, and the kids. Then you took me under your wing and got me hired by the Tribune as the second girl to be a copy clerk, or "BOY!" (as the editors would yell out when they needed new copy to edit). You boosted my self-esteem and let me know I had the capacity to anything I wanted, from photojournalism to park ranger, and to live where ever I lived. Moab won our long before most folks knew where it was, and here I remain, so grateful for your attention and care. May you rest in peace

Tom was a talented writer, a great conversationalist, but most of all a genuinely nice guy. I always will remember playing basketball, golf and tennis with Tom in our teens and our lunches in our 20's . Condolences to his family and many friends that will miss him. Congratulations to him on a life well lived. RIP Tom.

Tom ventured into broadcast journalism when we were assigned to interview people as they arrived to watch the musical at Granite High School. As always he was articulate, eloquent and funny. He will be missed by all. Condolences to his family and friends.

Love and condolences to sweet Nancy, her precious daughters and to Tom´s family.
I only knew Tom a few short years, but loved his story telling, his infectious laugh and his love for Nancy. They were a great couple and very devoted to each other. I admired Nancy so much as she took such good care of Tom, meeting his physical, mental and emotional needs as his health declined.
Hugs and cheers to both of you and hoping you can both find peace.
Love you both!
