Tjimkje Walstra Obituary

1920 ~ 2013
Tjimkje Walstra 92, our precious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 at home. She was born on June 24, 1920 to Sieger Pieters and Freerkje Vander Heide Hoeksma in Bergum, The Netherlands. Married Jacob Walstra November 19, 1938. They came to America after World War II to seek a better life. They owned and operated the European Delicatessen on 9th East and 13th South, Salt Lake City, Utah.
She loved to go camping and fishing with her family and friends. She fought a brave and valiant battle to stay alive for her grandson Joey, whom she loved more than anything in this world. He filled the void of her son, Joe, who died at 22 years of age in a car accident. Joey promised his grandmother that he would take care of her after his grandfather drowned in 1985. Grandma and Joey were very devoted to each other and spent their entire life together. Grandma and Grandpa raised Joey from birth to the age of 12 when Grandpa passed away. Joey in return fulfilled his promise to his grandma, by caring for her until her last breath. Tjimkje was admired and loved by all who knew her. She was an angel.
Tjimkje is survived by her daughter, Fray Zemp; grandchildren Joey and Misty Zemp, and great-granddaughter Jessica Jo. She was preceded in death by her husband Jacob Walstra; son Jochum (Joe) Walstra, her parents, five brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 12:15 p.m. at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East. A viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to services at the mortuary. The family would like to express their appreciation for the wonderful care that was given by Lighthouse Hospice. Online condolences will be gratefully welcomed at www.holbrookmortuary.com.

It's been 15 years or so since I'd seen Grandma, as she was affectionately known by all, but I've never forgotten her. She was the epitome of loyalty when it came to her family, especially Joey. Reading of her passing took me back to a different time, but one that I wouldn't trade. My prayers go to her family that will miss her, but imagine the reunion she's enjoying with her Husband and how glorious it must be. God bless-

When I was a young girl I would regularly walk down to the Delicatessen from my house about a block away. It was such a fun adventure. I always remember the staff there being so kind to me. I was so happy to learn Tjimkje Walstra's name after all these years. Thanks for the memories.
