Val Lund Obituary

1933-2015
Salt Lake City, UT-Val taught his last seminar on March 26, 2015. Wracked by end stage Parkinsons Disease, he quietly exited the classroom. Val was born on May 23, 1933 to Royal and Eva Alice Jensen Lund. He grew up in Salt Lake City, graduated from South High School and served a tour of duty in the Korean Conflict.
Upon his return home, he married the love of his life, Jane Ipson-Whitehead, they had 60 years together. Using the GI bill, Val attended the University of Utah, making him forever a Utah Man. After graduating, Val taught Science in both Jordan and Granite School Districts. With the exception of a brief interlude at Hercules Powder in the 60's, Val taught or administered in public school for 35 years. 1000s of students lives were improved because of his passion for science.
Val was also committed to public service, as a scoutmaster, election judge, missionary for the LDS church, Val also ran for office twice, once as a republican, once as a democrat.
Val leaves behind his wife Jane; sisters, Shirae Curd (Bill), Dorothy Christensen, and Peggy Greely; children, Eva Lund Belliston (Cory), Robert L. Lund (Kuma), Neils C. Lund (Cindy) and Lucy L. Johnson (Charles); his grandchildren John, James and J. Samuel Belliston, Rachel and Kaden Lund, Mason, Austin and Logan Lund, Joshua, Mateo and Jordan Johnson.
Val and Jane would like to thank the good people of the Mountain View 1st Ward, who went above and beyond in caring for them. They are also grateful to Bryce Brady and Valerie Simonsen for their loving care and Silverado Care center, which was their last home.
Finally, his family would ask that in lieu of flowers, a donation in Val's name be sent to the Jordan School Foundation to support science literacy.
A viewing will be held at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah, on Wednesday April 1, 2015 from 6-8:00 pm. I will always remember a very special Brother-in-law Val. He was always very kind and loving to all the whitehead family. My daughter Cassandra had him for a substitute teacher at Bonneville Jr. high and was proud to tell others he was her uncle. All the other students loved his classes. My thoughts and prayers are always with you Jane and I pray your children and grandchildren will always remember what a wonderful man Val has been to everyone he met. Love and heartfelt sympathy go out to all of you.

Val Lund was the Vice Principal at Butler while I was a teacher there. He was a great guy! He had a fabulous sense of humor, and treated all of the kids with respect and kindness, whether they deserved it or not. He was always so interesting to talk to. He knew so much about so many different subjects, particularly in the area of science. The world just lost a great one. My condolences are with the family at this time.
Sincerely,
Charsti Merrill
Butler Teacher from 1979-2004

If this is the Mr. Lund who taught at Central Jr. high. He was my favorite science teacher, and over 45 years later, I still remember clearly what he taught. I even tell my children some of what he taught us. Regardless, a teacher is a wonderful profession. God bless you through this loss.

I will never forget Mr. Lund ending the daily school announcements by saying, "Have a GREAT South Jordan day". Such great memories!

Val was a special colleague and mentor to me in my teaching career. I began my career at Butler Middle School 35 years ago with him as my administrator. He was helpful and always supportive. I too am a Science teacher. Val and I had many interesting discussions. I often substituted for him when he was teaching the G.E.D. science classes. I have only the best of memories of him. I am so thankful to have known him.

Mr. Lund was an amazing man, father and teacher. I will never forget his interest in using solar energy, from his solar collector on the hill, the passive solar windows on the front of the house to figuring out the air flow. A great man who will be missed ! Thank you for all you did and the example you set.
