Bertrand Batiste Obituary

December 1, 1960 - July 17, 2018
Bertrand Howard "Randy" Batiste entered eternal rest on July 17 at his Dallas home. He will be remembered for his fierce independence, kind heart, and warm smile. Batiste was a graduate of Randolph High School, UT-Austin and the University of North Texas. He was Assistant Director of Student AccessAbility at UT-Dallas, and a highly respected educator, counselor, innovator. He championed efforts to improve campus accessibility for people with disabilities. A paraplegic himself, Batiste was admired for his courage and quiet strength. "He was such a gentle spirit. He never complained about his disability," said a co-worker. He was preceded in death by his father Lieutenant Colonel Harold Batiste, Jr. (USAF), and is remembered by his loving mother Gertrude Batiste, brother Dr. Harold Batiste III (Scott Honeychurch) of Houston, and sister Dr. Amy Batiste (Michael Woodwick) of Minneapolis. Visitation is scheduled on Saturday, July 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Windcrest United Methodist Church (8101 Midcrown Drive, Windcrest, TX), followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made to the University of Texas-Dallas, Office of Student AccessAbility, 800 W. Campbell Rd, SPN10, Richardson, TX 75080, or giving.utdallas.edu/batiste.

Youve been missed Randy.

Even as a young man and a student in my high school band, Randy was inspirational to me. A powerful and beautiful example to his peers of dutiful obedience, humble leadership and strong faith even in the aftermath of the tragic accident that left him crippled. I could not have asked for a more perfect band member.

Dearest Batiste Family,
We were saddened to hear of the loss of such a wonderful man. Randy was one of the kindest people we have ever had the privilege of knowing. He was a happy smile as you entered his room, and a come again, anytime as you left. It didnt matter if you were a student in need; or a parent struggling with what tools to help their child succeed. Randy was there with guidance & knowledge, willing to help, if even to hand you a tissue & give reassurance. He was patient and kind, and we will miss him & his happy hello as we came to see him. He touched our lives & we are thankful for the time we had getting to know him. He truly made a difference in this big world. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. May your memories bring you peace during this time.

My sympathy goes out to the Batiste family over their loss. Over the 30 years I knew Randy I can say he was the nicest person I have ever met. He never had a bad or negative thing to say about anybody. He spent his whole career helping others and never asked for anything in return. I will sorely miss his company and friendship.
