Beth Eidelberg Obituary

September 26, 1933 - February 14, 2018
Beth Eidelberg Stern, nee Beth Elaine Weidenfeld, died Wednesday, February 14, 2018 in San Antonio at the age of 84. She was born in San Antonio, TX on September 26, 1933, to Anna and Amnon Weidenfeld. She was well known in the San Antonio fine arts community for over half a century as a painter, distinguished by her detailed watercolors of historic homes, architectural features, landscapes and, for several decades, her signature large, vivid scenes of flower and produce markets. She was an artist who found her most compelling inspiration in the images of South Texas, particularly in San Antonio's unique scenes. At one time, she produced a series of paintings reflecting her own nostalgia; scenes of her alma mater Jefferson High School's elegant architecture, the Uptown Theater, Five Points, and, in one instance, an ode to the original Luby's Cafeteria which is reported to have found its way into that corporation's home office. Despite the acclaim and popularity of the series, Beth was reluctant to ever reproduce any of the scenes. She spoke of the King William Historic District in reverent tones and often painted there. She noted with humor that, "All my life I painted outdoors. Now I've learned that I'm a plein air painter." She was preceded in death by first husband, Jack Eidelberg; second husband Leonard Stern; daughter Linda Eidelberg and son Mark Eidelberg. Beth is survived by a brother, Jay Weidenfeld and sister-in-law Barbara Weidenfeld, both of Berkeley, California; stepson Michael Stern, JD, of Austin, Texas; stepdaughter Carla Yegher (Steve) of Rockville, Maryland and three grandchildren. Beth's family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the staff and management of Franklin Park Alamo Heights, for their kindness, support, generosity and resourcefulness in caring for Beth over the past year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The San Antonio Art League, 130 King William Street, San Antonio, TX 78204 or Temple Beth El, 211 Belknap Pl, San Antonio, TX 78212.

I first met Beth when I joined the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts. She was a true artist, totally devoted to the endless pursuit of improving her creativity and talent. I joined her on dozens of paint outs with Janice Hindes plein air group, as well as portraiture sessions at the Academy.
Beth was a first class lady and I will always remember her. Jack Terrazas
