Carlos Abundis
June 8, 1932 - October 1, 2025
Carlos Abundis, born in San Antonio, Texas on June 8, 1932, to Vicente Abundis and Ofelia Romero, died peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on October 1, 2025, at the age of 93. He graduated from Lanier High School in 1950, after which, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and bravely served our country in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He was wounded in battle, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, and rose to the rank of Private First Class. He subsequently received the National Defense Service medal, the Korean War United medal, and the Korean War 50thAnniversary Service medal.
Carlos was married to Aurora Porter (Abundis) from San Antonio for 45 years until her death in 2004. He retired from Kelly Air Force Base in 1983 after 20 years of civil service, and with Aurora, owned and operated a successful restaurant and tortilla factory, "Don Carlos", which they sold in 1998. He had a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ, and he was a long-time parishioner at Saint Paul's Catholic Church where he was a fervent annual assistant with the church festival and fundraiser. Anyone who knew Carlos would recognize his famous yell "Hamburgers!" He was briefly a member of the Knights of Columbus, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards with family and friends.
Carlos also loved to travel, visiting family all over the US, and he cherished his trips abroad to Iceland, Thailand, France, Mexico, and Japan, among others. He was a long-time fan of the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs, and in his later years, became a huge fan of both college and professional women's basketball thanks to Caitlin Clark and Breanna "Stewie" Stewart. He enjoyed gambling, including going to the casinos or friendly wagers with family on Super Bowls. For years, Carlos and his brothers-in-law made every outdoor barbecue a true family gathering. He was a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, never missing a chance to attend important life events, no matter how small or far away, or lend a helping hand, regardless of the need.
Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, Vicente Abundis and Ofelia Romero, wife Aurora Porter Abundis, stepbrother Ramiro Gonzales, brother Roy Abundis, and sister Oralia Abundis Rodriguez.
