Christopher Cook Obituary

January 22, 1985 - May 24, 2017
Christopher David Cook passed from this life on May 24, 2017. The beloved only child of Gary and Mary Beth Cook from Marion, TX, he was born on January 22, 1985 in Montgomery, AL. A military brat, he moved with his parents to San Antonio (which he always regarded as his hometown), Washington D.C., Ramstein Air Base Germany, Charleston, SC, and back to San Antonio.

He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help elementary school, public schools in Bowie, MD, and North Charleston, SC, DOD Dependent Schools in Germany, and graduated from Antonian College Preparatory High School. Enrolled in the Antonian Latin Studies program, he twice placed second in the state-wide Art project for his beautiful portraits of the gods Nike and Mercury. He played soccer, basketball, and baseball, and was an avid golfer. He also loved body surfing in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Graduating in the top 10% of his class, he entered Texas A&M and joined the Corps of Cadets. He loved the Corps, and he loved A&M. Upon leaving A&M, he joined the staff at GameStop, quickly rising to an assistant manager position.

In 2012, he followed his dream of a military career and enlisted in the Marine Corps. He trained in San Diego and attended technical training at 29 Palms, CA, and was assigned to Camp Lejeune, NC.

He served during a joint RCAF/USMC exercise in Canada and spent six weeks in Norway in a NATO exercise. He marveled at the Northern Lights and said he believed pictures of them never did justice to their magnificence.

He was rated an expert marksman by the Marines and relished telling people he accomplished it while suffering from conjunctivitis, using that to motivate his fellow Marines to excel.

Chris adored the Christmas holidays, delighting in decorating the house and taking pride in the fact that his Christmas trees were always breathtaking. He always looked forward to coming home and was known to email his menu selections for the duration of his visit. While at home, he loved going to the firing range with his parents, playing cribbage, and connecting with friends. In addition to his parents, he is adored and missed by his aunts and uncles, cousins, and numerous adopted "family members" and longtime friends. He was especially close to his cousin, Kara Rubino, of West Orange, NJ, his best friend and closest confidant.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Barbara Cook of Omaha, NE, and Robert and Marion O'Grady of Roseland, NJ, and, later, Spring Hill, FL.

Christopher was a happy, fun-loving, and generous soul with a quick wit, an easy smile, and a heart of gold. He would gladly help anyone, and he was a very special man to anyone who knew him. The world is a much lesser place without him

The family will receive friends at the Schertz Funeral Home on Friday, June 23rd from 5 - 9 PM with a rosary at 7 PM. A requiem Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in downtown San Antonio at 9 AM on Saturday, June 24th.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation (the Lt Dan Band and other support programs for vets) in Chris's name at www.garysinise

April 21, 2018

I turned on my tv tonight April 21 and heard them calling Aggie Muster and when his name was called I felt compelled to go to my computer. Maybe because I had a son named Christopher David or maybe because I wanted to just let you know that his life, while much too short, was not lived in vain. From his bio I felt the mark he left on this world and know that he "has done what he could" as Jesus spoke of the woman who annointed his feet. As his parents you should feel great pride in your contribution of bringing him into this world to grace our planet. I pray that the pain of your loss is met with words of encouragement from strangers and friends alike. A sister in Christ.

Children are on loan to us from God, to make us smile, laugh, love and cry. We get to keep the joys and memories but God takes his angels back home. Keep a smile and be blessed.

Mr. & Mrs. Cook, as a parent/grandparent, I can't find the words to lessen your profound loss. No parent should have to suffer the loss of a child, an only child at that. Although I never had the honor of meeting your son, I see he was a very handsome man. His obituary listed his accomplishments and I'm sure he made you both very proud. We are thankful for his service to our country. We've known Mr. Cook since Adryanna was in his first 5th grade class at St. Monica. Our deepest sympathy goes out to your family. We pray that God gives you strength and courage to help get through what is probably the most difficult time of your lives.

Our most gracious Lord, life has me beaten down today. Lift me up to see you in moments of my day. Let me feel your presence in my pain.

Psalms 23:

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Praying for Chris' eternal rest and courage for his family. Chris was a friendly face and worker at GameStop and I always enjoyed seeing him and speaking with him there. I hope he prays for us all so we can see him again one day.
