Dan, you were a great and loyal friend. A man of so many talents, amateur magician, flamenco guitarist, professional artist, raconteur. I have many of your oil paintings and your vivid style and love of life will continue for me. Rest well, my friend.

Dan and I were friends from high school age until his untimely death a few days ago.

Dan accomplished so much in his lifetime. He was a well-recognized and prominent local artist, appearing in many local art shows and receiving the respect and admiration of his peers. He traveled to Spain to study the guitar and became proficient as a flamenco guitarist. He was a founder of and performer in the popular ensemble, The Ki-Flow Turtle, which played for full-house crowds at the now-defunct San Antonio clubs, The Bijou and J. Alfred Prufrock in the early 1970's.

He was supervising design architect for the Ursuline Academy Reconstruction Project, and subsequently wrote and published a book on the history of San Antonio's architecture.

He later developed a strong interest in antiquities and became a collector of intaglio rings and jewelry of various sorts, some dating back to the crusades, and early coins, chiefly imperial roman coinage, which almost became a profession for him.

In recent years the medications he was forced to take caused his hands to tremble such that he could not paint or draw, and which made it difficult for him to write. He nonetheless kept working on a book on the history of the Constantine era and its effects on the destruction of the early forms of Christianity.

San Antonio has lost one of its most remarkable arts figures, and many of his friends in the fields of the arts, law, and history have expressed their sorrow at his passing.

I was the apartment manager for the Morris Apartments during the years that Dan lived there. We had great and interesting conversations, and I was fortunate enough to read a book that he wrote. His coin collections and interest in the Roman Empire were so captivating. What an intelligent individual. He was a great friend and his wisdom and love of his surroundings were so admirable. Some saw him as a "loner" I saw it as a person picky about who he shared his thoughts and laughter with. I was fortunate enough to be in that bunch. Dan I'll miss the great dinners, the tarrot readings and the interesting chats with you.

i've known dan since i was about 8-9 years old. i am now 58 years old and hadn't seen dan since my mid- teens. but i have such vivd memories of him. dan was the first true bohemian i ever met, and i really liked him. the contributions he made over his lifetime to the arts in san antonio are unfathomable. he was a genius, and even when his body started to work against him, he kept trying to learn and contribute. he will be greatly missed by all of us who truly appreciated who dan was and what he gave us.
