David Kramer Obituary

Dr. David H. Kramer
August 16, 1936 - February 29, 2024
Dr. David H. Kramer, esteemed Cardiologist, mentor and friend, passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 87 after a short illness.

Born on August 16, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Kramer received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1956 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1960. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in 1961 and his Residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in 1964. Dr. Kramer then completed his Fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York in 1967.

Dr. Kramer relocated to San Antonio in 1972 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center. He established the first cardiac Cath lab at the Audie Murphy V A Hospital San Antonio in 1974. Dr. Kramer was in the private practice of cardiology in San Antonio for many years before becoming Chief of Cardiology at the Olin E. Teague V.A. Hospital in Temple, Texas in 2008. During his years of private practice, Dr. Kramer was instrumental in establishing the Heart Transplant Program in San Antonio.

Dr. Kramer was a member of many prestigious professional organizations including a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Council on Clinical Cardiology, American Heart Association, and the Society for Endovascular Surgery to name but a few.

David enjoyed reading, hunting and traveling. He especially loved spending time near the water and his many trips to Europe. He collected art and was a painter himself. He liked good food and a good bottle of wine and, over the years, he built up a very impressive wine collection. He loved his children and his grandchildren and was so proud of each of them. They were all a source of joy and he took pride in their accomplishments. He adored his wife and was so grateful for the many years they had together.

Husband, father, grandfather, friend. A man of many skills and interests and a respected cardiologist. There are countless stories of the lives he touched and the lives he saved. So many friends, colleagues, and admirers. He left a legacy that will be long remembered, and we will miss him.

Dr. Kramer is survived by his wife, Janette Kramer; son Stephen Kramer (Ilene), daughter Margie O'Krent (Sam), son Marty Kramer (Jennifer); grandchildren Matt Kramer, Ian Kramer (Jessie), Julia Kramer and Grant Kramer; and sister Ginger Portnoy. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Andrea Street and John Street. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Samuel Kramer.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on March 8, 2024, at 11:00 am at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E. 78232, followed by a reception. A private family burial will be held at Mission Burial Park North (Dominion) at a later time.

I worked with Dr. Kramer at SWTMH starting in '76. I found him to be not only a very brilliant cardiologist and physician in general, but a great man whom I did enjoy working with. He was indeed a proud father who loved to talk about his children...and a man to be proud OF. It was a privilege to work with him. Prayers....

I am very saddened by this news. I worked with Dr. Kramer at San Antonio Community Hospital, now known as MSTH. I also worked for him in his office. He was a wonderful cardiologist, kind , caring, knowledgeable and professional.
I will miss him. I will treasure all the fond memories.
It was a true honor to have known him and work for him. May he rest in peace

I worked with Dr Kramer in the mid 70´s at Community Hospital. He was one of a kind. A very talented Cardiologist, who I´m sure saved countless of lives. He was always on the go. I remember our near daily conversations about the stock market. He was a very smart, and gentle man. He always thought of the staff when he visited the cafeteria. He would always get goodies to bring either to the Cath Lab or whatever department he was working at next.
When I moved from Specialty and Transplant Hospital to main Methodist, as a Nuclear Cardiology Technologist, he would sometimes visit with me and bring me desserts. I remember that one of my coworkers tried to kiddingly make fun of me, he straighten them out. He wouldn´t have any part of that. Even though they didn´t mean it, he came to my rescue. I have never forgotten that. Thank you Dr Kramer, for being my friend.
May you Rest In Eternal Peace. You fought the good fight, and You have finished your race, good and faithful servant.

David was the mainstay of the cardiology service at, what is now the Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in San San Antonio. (It was a Humana Hospital back then.) He would be in the cath lab at all hours of the day and night. He kept that hospital afloat during a very challenging time and its eventual success was in no small measure a result of David's love of patients, staff and, yes, even young hospital administrators!
