Edward Smith Obituary

SMITH
E.L. "Edward Lee, Smitty, Honey" Smith was called by his supreme fishing partner on February 18, 2010. He was born June 10, 1925 to Cecelia and George Smith. He served in the U.S. Air Force in WWII. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gay Goodale Smith, and his two sons, Greg and wife Cindy, and Frank and wife Miranda. He has six grandchildren: Tisha Burnette and fiancé Russell Pruski, Tyler Smith and wife Tanya, Elisha Byman and husband Jon, Toby Smith, Emily Gorecki and husband Steve, and Elaine Smith. Great grandchildren: Jayden and Kaylee Burnette, Dustyn, Treyton and Mckinlee Smith, and Oliver Byman. Special family: Larry Gaskin, Carlene McDevitt, Dr. Martin Wiesenthal and Richard Lane, along with all of the staff at E.L. Smith Plumbing and numerous nieces and nephews. "Honey" was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his wife, Gay, and their many friends. He always had a joke to laugh at and a story to tell. To say he was a colorful individual is an understatement. He was larger than life and commanded attention when he entered a room. He was very active in his plumbing industry association. At one time he was called The "John Wayne" of the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association. He will be missed by many and remembered by more. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at Coker United Methodist Church on N. Coker Loop Rd. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 1:00 pm.

Greg,
I just heard about E.L.'s passing. Gale and I send our deepest sympathies to you, your Mom and extended Smith family. Smitty was truly one of a kind and will be missed by all that knew him. Our prayers are with you and your family. May the Lord give you strength during this difficult time and comfort knowing that Smitty is at peace.

Gay, I am sorry I did not attend the funeral but I had eye surgery and just found out about E.L. We go all the way back to 1946 when we attended apprenticeship school together. You couldn't ask for a better life long friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. He will truly be missed.

Greg, Frank, and Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. E.L. was a great man, teacher, and friend. It was an honor to work for such a respected company such as E.L. Smith Plumbing or as Bud called it.."Smith Plumbing". Once on a job site with Mr. Smith he taught me the correct way to dig a trench, he said "it must have square walls and he better be able to fit his size 13 boot in it". A lesson learned that I tell to so many people. Thanks E.L. for all the memories and knowledge of life you have given me. See you on the lake sometime. Robert (RT) Trevino

I knew E.L. Smith and by watching the comings & goings at the shop. I worked across the street at Bexar Electric and visited with he and his staff. Never a dull moment. I was especially entranced with the company's sign..a plumbing pipe and the PE telephone number. What a way to remember that fabulous era of advertising!! Smitty, as many knew you at Bexar Electric, rest in peace and enjoy eternal fishing with joy!

The Lenow Family

February 19, 2010

Time only made the relationship between E.L. and Arundel (AB the Jew) Lenow better. They were life long friends and business partners sharing two offices with a pass-through window to share a game of cards, a meatloaf sandwich or a cold brew. Both of these “giants” could spin tails from their childhood antics to an insanely frantic day at the plumbing shop that would make you laugh and cry simultaneously. Sadly, there are very few heroes left in the world and the Lenow Ladies have been blessed with two: one sits at home thinking and missing his friend, and the other is on the best fishing trip ever. Uncle Lee will be forever in our hearts.
