Eugene Toifl Obituary

EUGENE WHITNEY TOIFL
November 17, 1931 - October 6, 2025
Eugene W. Toifl went to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 6, 2025. He was born to Helen P. Flynn and Eugene W. Toifl in Brooklyn, New York on November 17, 1931. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Shirley Ann Clem Toifl, his second beloved wife of 18 years, Joyce VanDeWalle, son Philip E. Toifl, daughter Mary Ann Ramirez, and grandson Nathan Ramirez. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Helen McDonald (Randy), son Sam D. Toifl, 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Eugene was a proud U.S. Army Veteran and served with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. He was a San Antonio Police Officer for 36 years where he was promoted to Detective and Sergeant. He led with wisdom and a high level of integrity. He joined the Memorial Services Detachment (MSD) on April 1, 2003, and faithfully served as a Rifleman for nearly 14 years. Eugene (Gino) deeply enjoyed volunteering with the MSD and supporting our veteran community.

He was a Charter member of Alzafar Highlander Bagpipe Band and proudly played the bagpipes in numerous ceremonies including his granddaughter Mistie Boyle's (Joey) wedding, parades, and burials, always bringing honor and dignity to every service. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where he served as a member of the ACTS community, taught RCI classes, Eucharistic Ministry, Adoration Chapel, Knights of Columbus, and Bejar 56 Order of Alhambra.

Gene spent his late seventies and eighties riding his Harley Davidson Trike. He experienced lots of joy with the freedom of his motorcycle. He enjoyed going to family functions especially his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's athletic and school events. He will be greatly missed for his fabulous storytelling, jokes, Biblical knowledge, and love.

A few years after the loss of his second wife, he moved to The Meadows at Morningside Ministry where he made many friends. Throughout his last several years he was lovingly cared for by his daughter, Mary Helen, along with help from Patricia Ibarra and Christina Esquivall. Patty and Christina have become like family. Eugene spent the last year of his life at Oak Mist Assisted Living Home. He was compassionately cared for by Carolyn, Ann Marie, and owner Bianca Bodea.

The family expresses heartfelt thanks to Abundant Hospice, River City Home Care, Father Chris Munoz, Pastor Bill Tucker, and Concordia Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 16th from 1:30pm to 3:00pm at the Angelus Chapel. Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Friday, October 17th at 9:30am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00am at Concordia Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to I Care Memory (icarememory.org) or a church of your choice.

Yesterday

Gene was my mother's cousin. They were raised together so they were very close and I have the fondest memories of times spent with Gene and Shirley and Mary Helen, Mary Ann, Sam, and Phil. We spent times together in Brooklyn as well as in San Antonio and though it has been a long time since we were in touch, the Toifl's were a wonderful part of my young life. I remember Gene coming to California for a visit and playing his bagpipes on my back patio - set up quite a ruckus with the neighborhood dogs and one annoyed cockatoo. Such good times. Gene will be reunited with family in heaven (including my mom) and I pray for his family and friends as they grieve his passing.

It was my pleasure to have known and worked with Gene. He was an honorable Mason and contributed his time to the community selflessly.

Uncle Gene, your story telling, faith, and your sense of humor were just some of your best attributes. A one of a kind man that we all were so fortunate to know and have in our lives. You will be missed beyond what words can express. Love you.
