Gilbert Rodriguez Obituary

Gilbert "Gibby" Rodriguez
July 5, 1943 - June 24, 2024
Gilbert "Gibby" Rodriguez, born on July 5, 1943, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024, with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe R. and Mary Jane Rodriguez, his brothers Joe Robert and Stephen Rodriguez. Gibby is survived by his beloved wife, Norma Rodriguez, his children, Gilbert Melott, Donna Cook (Stephen), Brian Arevalos (Sylvia), and Alisha Muñoz (Jacob), as well as 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. His family was the center of his life, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness.

Gibby was proud to be a descendant of the Ximenes/Rodriguez Family whose legacy continues with the many generations of family members who have continued to restore the Chapel of Miracles/Senor de los Milagros since 1813. He was proud to know that the Chapel is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. He was the heartbeat of the family's beloved Chapel.
Gibby, being born and raised in San Antonio, was a proud Class of 1962 graduate from Burbank High School. He distinguished himself on the football field, earning several accolades, including a football scholarship to Trinidad State College in Colorado. His dedication and skill were admired by all who knew him during his football career. After his football days, Gibby discovered his true calling in public service. He embarked on a remarkable career that spanned over 50 years, dedicated to the Bexar County Courthouse and the United States Federal Courthouse, where he served as the Judicial Assistant for the Western District of Texas under Honorable Fred Biery. Gibby was the embodiment of a committed court staff member, and public servant.

Gibby will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of dedication, kindness, and service will continue to inspire and guide us all. Though his voice is still, his spirit echoes in the memories of those who loved him."

A Mass to celebrate Gibby's life will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., St. Luke Catholic Church, located at 4603 Manitou Dr., San Antonio, TX 78228.

Gibby was always the guy who was available to get answers from, or would get answers to you. He was just good at everything and friendly as can be. May he rest in peace, and my condolences to his family.

I really have not known Gibby and Norma for that long but he was quick to let me into his inner circle of friends and family with warmth and compassion that flows from both of them. I know this is for Gibby but it's hard to talk about one without mentioning the other because they were so intertwined and devoted to one another. A model example set forth on how to do things right. He will most certainly be missed. He left a deep impression on me and touched me just with his kindness, quick wit and some NSFW jokes. Rest in Peace, Gibby.
