Herbert Janson Obituary

JANSON
Bro. Herbert H. Janson, S.M., 88, passed to eternal life on Saturday, March 31, 2012. A native of Columbia, Illinois, he was born on September 17, 1923 to John and Bernardine Weilbacher Janson, who had five sons and two daughters. He entered the Society of Mary in St. Louis in 1937 after the encouragement of a cousin Bro. Eugene Janson, S.M. He professed first vows in August of 1941, and shortly after completed studies at the University of Dayton, earning a B.S. in Education. Bro. Herbert professed final vows in 1946; in that same year he finished a Masters in Mathematics from St. Mary's University. Bro Janson is most known for his dedicated service to Central Catholic High School, over 36 years. He also served short stints at three other Marianist high schools (McBride, Vianney and Chaminade) in the St. Louis area. Besides Math, Bro Herbert taught Religion, Social Studies and Typing. He had a strong interest in athletics having coached baseball and basketball, in addition to serving for a time as athletic director. Bro. Janson was instrumental in the Texas Catholic Boys Camp at TECABOCA, a Marianist Spiritual Center outside of Kerrville, TX. He served as camp director for over ten years in the summer months. He came to St. Mary's University in 1986 as an instructor of Mathematics retiring in 2008 after 16 years of service. In his later years he authored or co-authored a number of books. A sister-in-law Mrs. Clara Janson of Columbia, IL, several nieces and nephews and his religious brothers of the Society of Mary survive him. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 3 from 4 - 7 pm, followed by rosary at 7 pm in the chapel of the Marianist Residence, St. Mary's University. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 4 pm on Wednesday, April 4 at Holy Rosary Parish, 159 Camino Santa Maria, with interment following in the Marianist Cemetery at St. Mary's University. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Marianist Province of the United States 4425 W. Pine Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63108. Arrangements by:

I was one of Bro Herb's many nieces. Many in my family also "have the math gene" but my Uncle did the most with his. I was lucky enough to inherit copies of the books he wrote about mathematicians and his Marianist family. Coming up on 76, I am now looking for someone who might be interesting in inheriting these books.

Bro. Janson was one of my "BIG TIME" Math Teachers!!
Going from Algebra to Calculus, with Geometry taken in the Summer at CCHS, under his celebrated tutelage, I was MORE than prepared for the rigors of Calculus & Physics (being a Pre-Med) at RICE UNIVERSITY where there are only "Whales" and no "Minnows" as students.
It wasn't until I matriculated to Rice that I fully appreciated what this true "Man of God" did for me. God Bless you Brother and I know the Blessed Virgin personally escorted this great "Marianist" through the pearly Gates meeting Her Son....
Thank you Bro. Janson for answering your Vocation with the affirmative!

Still think of you often .. especially when I have a math problem that at 75 years young I still have problems. You inspired me to see the world.

If only Louis L'Amour knew what a fan you were of his books. You were the master of the overhead projector. If only we had iPhones to record the way you showed us how to work through problems. I always chuckled at how you referred to me as Disco Charlie. That was my side gig when hosting dances in the old gym. Rest in peace, Maestro.

Thank you God for allowing me to cross paths with Brother Herbert. He was the kind of man you enjoyed being with. He was a great teacher. Even when he was out of class he was a friend to all. Thank you, Brother Herbert, for making me enjoy your classes.

I will never forget his word,"Algebra develops your Brain" how true that is. I did not go to college until I was in the Army. I was able to attend different Universities and complete all courses that I enrolled .Thank you Brother Herbert and all the Brothers at Central for the excellent education I received,GOD BLESS THEM ALL.

He was always there for me. I struggled in second year algebra so he would on his own time help after school. My name in school was Ray but there was another Ray in our class so he changed my name to Raymond since we both had the same last name. This was in 1956. My son also had the pleasure of having Brother Janson in his class and told him you are Raymond #2. A great loss to the To Central Catholic and the Society of Mary.

Thank you Algebra students for honoring my uncle and my dad's baby brother. As a kid living in his home town of Columbia IL .. we didn't see him too much. But did make it 2 times to Tecabuca camp. He loved his students and algebra .. hat gene kinda runs in the family.
After my grad degree, I worked on satellite constellation development and finally found a math he was not very familiar with .. radio wave propagation theory!
Thanks again from one of his many nieces.

I was a student at St Mary's University in 1995 and had Bro Janson for business math. St. Mary is in San Antonio which is a river city. Whenever I answered a math problem incorrectly, he always responded with "There's trouble in river city" :) I say that to this day. Much Love Bro Janson!

Bro Herby was not only my high school mentor and teacher (in the early 60s!), but a family friend from Illinois (via my Dad's family). I also had the pleasure to know him during his oversite of Texas Catholic Boys Camp in Kerrville (where I [as Junior Counselor] and my Mom [as Camp Nurse] served for several years). My last visit with him (and Bro Mac) was at a Alumni fundraising swing they did thru the Bay Area several years ago. What great guys!! (The both of 'em!)

Brother Jansen taught me advanced math at Central. He had a very relaxed way of teaching, that only comes from experience. He and Black Mac made trips around the state to round up contributions for Central. I talked with him at the funeral of one of the other Brothers in the 1980s. He was a good man. They were all good men.

Bro Janson was a great professor at St. Mary's University. I was in a summer program in 1999 right out of high school and I still remember lots of the math skills he taught me. That was more than 15 years ago and I have taught them to my daughter. Just recently I started to look for him to tell him "thank you". "Thank you Bro Janson, I am sorry I waited too long to tell you".

Brother Janson you gave up much in this life to help many... and left a mark on many a soul. Not Only were you a Great Teacher Making Math and Learning Fun, but you were Courageous, Noble and Honorable. You called out the best in your students... you saw the good and possibilities that others could not see! Great is your reward in Heaven and may we all learn from your example while we are still here in this world! What a Wonderful Life and Wonderful Man! God Blessed Us Each & Every One By Getting A Chance To Know You!

Shortly after the funeral Mass started at Holy Rosary, a team of young college women (12+) filed into the pews, outfit in blue uniforms - shirts and shorts. Noticeably "glowing", it was obvious they had hurried in from the hot field. After Mass I asked if they'd had Bro. Herbie as a math teacher. One young lady replied: No, he was our benefactor and ever-present supporter of St. Mary's softball team.
That's our Bro. Herbie, helping to actively groom young people for life, not only through formal classes, but by life lessons via sports.

I offer my heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Brother Janson. He taught me math and typing at Central Catholic. He was an excellent teacher with a wonderful smile who made learning fun. He was also my senior homeroom teacher and I remember his weekly athletics newsletters, and showing us how to use statistics to improve our odds of winning the local newspaper's contest to pick the winners of various football games. In later years, I always enjoyed visiting with him at different alumni gatherings. He worked tirelessly in his efforts to raise funds for the Marianists, authoring and co-authoring many excellent books. My favorites are 'Values For Life' and 'Marianists in God's Acre'. Brother Janson, thank you for your persevering service to Jesus Christ, His Church, the Society of Mary, and your students, especially those at Central Catholic. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Many wonderful memories of Bro Herbert! Family connections (via my Dad's in neighboring Millstadt and Belleville Illinois), having him as my math teacher and basketball coach at CCHS and director at Texas Catholic Boys Camp, both in the 1960's - many, many memories. Brother Herbert Janson was a genuine, caring educator with a passion for mathematics. But he taught us more than just mathematics, he also taught us about life. Who else could teach us words such as “yokel, dumnkopf, bleistift, and kugelschrieber”?

I enjoyed visiting with Bro Herbie when he would travel to San Francisco for the Alumni gatherings. Yes—a true Marianist in God's Acre.

April 4, 2012

Br. Janson was my freshman Algebra teacher at Central in 1970-71. I can't thank him enough for his making me understand that people learn at different speeds and that it takes some people longer to learn - hence I had to work harder to learn in certain subjects.

I enjoyed spending time with Br. Janson and Br. McMurtrey when they started coming out to California in the late 90s to meet Central Alumni on three different trips. I was so glad that I had lunch with him in February when I was in San Antonio at St. Mary's.

Br. Janson touched so many lives and like so many other Brothers, made Central affordable to many families.

I am most saddened to have learned of the loss of this great man to the Society of Mary and to society in general. Brother Herbert was my freshman homeroom teacher during 1945-1946,the academic year cut short because of the polio epedemic.Early in the year, Brother celebrated his 22nd birthday. I can't help thinking of the thousands of former students, like me, who were so extremely fortunate as to have learned from Brother Herbert. God bless him.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE. THE WORLD WILL MISS HIM. HE WAS A REAL CLASS PERSON WHO ALWAYS HAD TIME TO TALK TO PEOPLE ESPECIALLY HIS FORMER STUDENTS. HE TAUGHT ME ALGEBRA IN THE 9TH GRADE. Brother Janson was my freshman algebra teacher in 1962-63. He instilled in me a love of mathematics that I have to this day. He would encourage, cajole, coerce and if none of those worked he wasn't above walking right up and yelling at you. Whatever it took, he made sure his message got through. I won't forget him.

April 3, 2012

A wonderful and caring person. He took time every day after school to help me with algebra. Always called me Raymond instead of Ray and found out he had my son, also Rey and called him Raymond in class also.

Brother Janson. Thank you for being my baseball coach my junior and senior years. I have fond memories of you teaching us baseball on your terms. The pros call it by a fancy name now..."small ball". I can still see the fire in your eyes when things did play out according to the script you laid out in your tough and strong mind...and I sure remember those times when we saw you happy and pleased when they did. As I reflect back trying to bring you to mind right now I see you standing by the batters box in the same clothes you wore during the day with your baseball shoes..cannot remember if you wore spikes or just sneakers. Mostly by the batters box teaching and coaching. I treasure the couple of times when you rode with us to practice and a game. You spoke about the cardinals and how to hit to right field. I will forever remember you Brother and my prayers for all who enjoyed the game with you.

I first meet Bro. Herbie my freshman year at CCHS -1957. He was my first basketball coach and introduced me to the term "rainbow" which was used to describe a lay up that never touched the backboard. Brother Herbie Jansen you were an amazing individual. It was a pleasure to know you and a priviledge to be your student. You taught me tenacity and how to think like a mathematician. In your analysis class my senior year, you taught me how to push thru a problem. I learned to “DOOOO Something!! Don't just sit there…do something!! ANYTHING!!! But not just do NOTHING!!!?” The quizzical look on your face when you said the last part “…do NOTHING!!!?” gave away your deep inner belief that we could solve the problem…and that you didn't even understand how someone could not at least TRY. You were tough minded. Your belief in me helped me when I couldn't believe in myself. After being told by another instructor at the end of freshman year that they couldn't recommend me to take geometry over the summer…you saw something and built me up, and I won the math award senior year. Your encouragement and acknowledgement made a HUGE difference in my life. The world needs more people like you Bro. Herbie. God bless…

Bro. Jansen,
