Joe Calderon Obituary

September 14, 1966 - August 11, 2017
Joe D. Calderon, III was born on September 14, 1966 to Joe B. Calderon, Jr. and Carrie D. Calderon in San Antonio. At an early age, Joe's mother noticed that he was developing differently from other infants. Joe was eventually diagnosed with autism and significant intellectual disabilities. It became his mother's mission to get Joe the best education and care that she could. She researched and communicated with autism experts at a time when autism was unheard of. She dreamed that as an adult, Joe would live as independently as possible in a small group home.

Joe began school as a special needs student in the SAISD. As a young boy, he transferred to the Autistic Treatment Center where he thrived with the help of his teacher Celeste. When Joe reached adulthood, Celeste found a group home in Seguin that offered the continuous teaching and care he needed. Group homes were rare in 1989 when Joe entered Mosaic's Burr Oak Home. He resided at Burr Oak for the next 28 years. While there, he shared a beautiful home with five friends and residents, participated in Special Olympics, attended advocacy conferences in Austin, received confirmation and communion at St. James Catholic Church, went on outings and even met movie celebrities when they filmed in Gruene. Joe always liked relaxing, looking at books and magazines, watching cartoons and eating his favorite foods.

Joe lived with many chronic medical issues. In July 2014, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. For three years, he braved surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but finally succumbed to his ailments.

Joe is survived by his sisters Laura Calderon, Jacqui Pickens and Dan Pickens, nephew Christopher Calderon, and maternal and paternal aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Many thanks to Joe's Seguin "family": Desiree, Maggie, Patricia, all Burr Oak and Mosaic residents and staff, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center staff and the many others who touched his life!

Jackie, you have my deepest sympathy on the passing of your brother Joey. I remember him when I would go over your house to play when we were young girls. He was a happy boy. He is in God's hands now with your parents. Dee Dee Lopez (Diana Riojas)

Laura and Jackie, I remember Joey well, as my mother, Mrs. De La Garza used to watch him after school. I remember his love for books and magazines. I remember seeing Joey at Special Olympics , as I have worked with students with special needs for many many years. I will especially remember the love and dedication your mother had for Joey. She was truly a special lady. Your family was very blessed to have Joey in your lives. I myself have a daughter with special needs, and she is the light of my life. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family in your time of sorrow. I will never forget your brother, as he was just a few months older than me. God bless you and your family.

So sorry to hear of Joey's passing. He was a very special person - my mother used to watch him after school, and cared a great deal for him. His mother was so devoted to him - it was inspirational. Hopefully, he is reunited with her now and they are happy together.

What a Beautiful Testimony of Your Loved one. I wish I had met him.
I apologize because I don't know your Family. I was looking for a Friend of mine's Obit; but got overwhelmed and emotional reading the Love in this Obit. Bless You All.

I had the privilege and the pleasure of knowing Joey over the last 10 years. There were times he could put a smile on my face and make me laugh out loud...there were times he could scare me when he was upset or mad.. regardless, he brought out the best in me. Joey was such an easy read...you knew when he was happy & in a good mood and when he was upset or hurting or just not feeling good. You knew what he liked and what he didn't,Joey had no problem letting you know. His likes were diverse, from watching cooking shows to watching Star Wars, working on puzzels and always knowing where the fridge was ! At the end of a day when you were leaving and he would say "good-bye, good-bye", it would just melt your heart. When Joey would say "OK,OK" when you asked him if everything was alright, you knew everything was OK ! I will miss Joey very much, he was a very important part of my life, he made me a much better person, a more caring person, a more loving person. My buddy was an incredible teacher. He will truely be missed.
