John Pate Obituary

PATE
John B Pate, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2012. John Pate was born June 29, 1925 in Conroe, Texas. He graduated from Harlingen High School and worked in his father's men's clothing store in Harlingen. During World War II he joined the US Army serving in the 6th infantry division of the Sixth Army. He arrived safely in the Philippines after a 30 day crossing of the Pacific in a crowded troop ship only to be stricken later with Typhus, Malaria and Polio. He became a medic after recovering from Typhus. John survived multiple beach landings in the Philippines including the battle of Luzon where he was awarded the Bronze star. John received the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. Returning home to San Antonio after the war, he eventually opened his own men's clothing store, Pates Men's Wear. Following those years in business for himself, John also worked for Satel's Menswear.
He later served in Stephen's Ministry where he ministered to so many people in need. He became close friends to certain individuals he helped in their time of need.
Mr. Pate was preceded in death by his brother Robert, his wife, Edna Clark Pate, his daughter Robbie Pate Ward, and his wife Katherine Pate. John is survived by his daughter Cheryl Pate Zack of Atlanta, Georgia, and his granddaughters Karen Ward, Stacey Ward both of San Antonio, Sydney Zack of Atlanta, Georgia, and his faithful dog Abby.

Services will be held for Mr. Pate on Monday, January 14th at 10 AM at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, at the columbarium.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Animal Defense League of Texas. ADLTEXAS.org, or the animal shelter of your choice.

Dear John, You treated me like a son all those years I worked at Pate's Men's Wear. You invested in me and when time came for me to leave to fly, you encouraged me to pursue my lifelong dream. Thank you and God bless you.

In my complete weariness of helping my father make this transition, from this life to his next, i failed to list the names of his 3 step-children. Billy Moore, Charlie Moore and Ruth Moore Walker. These 3 lovely people were Katherine's children by her first marriage.
Please accept my apologies Billy, Charlie and Ruth.

Uncle John is a happy man in his new home in heaven, reunited with loved ones that went before him. Those of us left behind will feel the loss for years to come. There will be times when you think of something you want to say and realize he isn't here anymore. It's a human emotion that makes us a caring, loving people. But don't worry, time will make thing easier, the memories remain, and most importantly, Uncle John will suffer no more. His God called him home, he needed a new Angel.

John Pate was the father of my dear friend, Cheryl. He was a gentleman and always a sharp dressed man! Even less than a month ago when I was in his home, he was well groomed, with a crease in his pants. A kind man and a Christian, he will be missed by family and a host of friends. "...neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities,...nor height nor depth...shall be able to separate us from the love of God." Romans 8:38,39
