Ken Fowler Obituary

KEN FOWLER
February 19, 1947 - July 14, 2025
Ken Fowler passed away on July 14, 2025, with finality-if reluctantly. Known for his bemused attitude toward life, Ken navigated it with humor, adaptability, and a sense of whimsy.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and raised in New Orleans, Ken earned degrees in Zoology and Landscape Architecture from LSU and later a Master of Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley. He was commissioned as an Army officer upon his first graduation and served in the U.S. Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1978.

Ken's career path was as varied as his interests. Over the years, he worked as a laborer, truck driver, boat driver, Army officer, teacher, and professor before ultimately dedicating himself to landscape architecture. His professional journey took him from the City of Austin to private firms in Berkeley and Gainesville, Florida. In 1982, Ken moved to San Antonio to join Ford, Powell & Carson, where he met his future business partners. Together, they founded Rialto Studio in 1998-a capstone to Ken's career. He was especially proud of projects in downtown San Antonio, southern Nevada, the Texas A&M University System, and the San Antonio Zoo. He retired in 2014.

Ken was deeply engaged in the American Society of Landscape Architects, serving as Texas Chapter President and spearheading the long-running AIA/ASLA Scholarship Golf Classic. He also contributed to the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board, visiting over 17 universities during his tenure.

Personally, Ken valued hard work, wit, and the joy of play. He enjoyed reading, gardening, sports, beer, and humor-especially when laced with irony. Golf became his greatest hobby in retirement, and he took particular joy in sharing rounds with his son, Evan, with hopes of passing along a lifelong love of the game.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Marie Fowler. He is survived by his loving wife Carol, his son Evan (from his 27-year marriage to Jana, whom he remembered with great appreciation), his brother Mark and sister-in-law JoAnn, nephews Cole and Nicholas, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Quarry Golf Club Ballroom on August 1st at 10 a.m., a fitting tribute to a man who spent many of his favorite days there. Per his wishes, Ken will be cremated and his ashes spread in places he loved most.
