LT. Retired Obituary

Lt. Col Sidney A. Glenn, Sr., U.S. Air Force, Retired
July 11, 1925 - April 9, 2024
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Sid was preceded in death by Lyda, his loving wife of 56 years, his older brother Stan and his "baby" sister, Shirley. Sid is survived by his children, Debbie and husband Tommy, Garnet, Beth, Mike, Bert and wife Laura, 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Sid grew up in Los Angeles and at age 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army's Aviation Cadet program. He did gunnery training on the B-17 and received his navigator wings and an officer's commission in 1945 as WW II ended. He remained on active duty one more year and was discharged at the age of 21. He then attended Arizona State University where he met Lyda. He saw her on the tennis court and knew she was the one for him. Their favorite pastimes were playing bridge and dancing. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who could be found throwing the ball and coaching his children and more recently, having face time calls with his grandchildren and great grandchildren on Sunday afternoons. He loved football and his alma mater, Arizona State, where he played on the original Sun Devil football team of 1947 and graduated as the Student Body President in 1950. He spent a few years playing and coaching football before being recalled to the U.S. Air Force. Demonstrating loyalty to country, Sid served over 34 years in the Army Air Corps, the Reserves and later the US Air Force. He was a 3 war veteran: WW II, Korea and Vietnam as a tail gunner, bombardier, navigator and command pilot. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement, the Bronze Star, and multiple Air Medals. He was proud to profess his faith in Christ and loved his home Church, Concordia Lutheran and its members. The last 13 years, he resided at Franklin Park and met many loving friends who support and care for each other. At the age of 98, Sid was called to heaven where he looks forward to playing bridge and dancing with Lyda once again. So very sorry to learn of Sid's passing. He was a great boss when I worked for him in the Thailand Airlift Control Center, Don Muang Aprt and U-Tapao Afld, Thailand, 1969-1970. Later, he became a good friend and poker playing buddy in San Antonio. Sure will miss you, old friend!
