I grew up with Lucella and Gary. The whole family where such nice folks. She looked like her mom. As an educator, thank you Lucella for all you did for the kids of our community.

OMG I knew her when she was a teenager. Me and Gary her brother were best friends. They moved to Houston, I lost track of them. Lucella was very nice to all the kids in the neighborhood. May she rest in peace...

I was blessed to have Ms. Whatley as my journalism teacher at Randolph. She encouraged a class of interested no-nothing students into a very talented class of top UIL journalism students and BIRD'S EYE VIEW reporters, photographers, editors, etc. Through her ability to see the talent of each student and help them hone those talents without losing their personality within it, Ms. Whatley showed love, care and a spiritual joy to each one she taught. Ms. Whatley, the way you touched my life and how your lessons and my thoughts of you have helped me through many of my life's hurdles, I thank-you! Be at peace and rest in Christ's loving arms!

Ms. Whatley was a wonderful teacher, and I have thought about her frequently over the last few years, especially after I became a teacher! I think her most wonderful characteristic was caring about individual students in a way that made them feel like they belonged and had something valuable to contribute.

Lucy was a wonderful neighbor. She was so thoughtful and did many special things for my young children. They especially liked seeing her driving around with her dogs Jessica and Snowy. She will be missed in the neighborhood but will always be a part of our hearts.

Lucella and I grew up together sharing play times, mud & malt-o-meal pies, school memories, family outings and many other times too numerous to mention. She will always have a very dear place in my heart.
Gary, my very best to you and your family, may God bless you and comfort you in this time of sorrow.

Mrs. Whatley was my journalism teacher at Robert E. Lee. She was one of the few people back then to take a chance on a geeky kid who wanted to write and introduced me to a world of unforeseen opportunities. I still have the first story I wrote for her and the "Bugle Call" - a tale of our summer choir tour of Mexico. It was a front page banner story of the first issue of my junior year. I was hooked. Her trust and encouragement gave me confidence to not only explore my first profession as a reporter, but embrace my passion for telling people's stories. We lost touch over the years, but I'll never lose what she gave me. Rest in peace, Mrs. Whatley.

Dear Family,
What a creative teachetr and friend! I was honored to share time with Lucella at Randolph High School long ago---her enthusiasm and concern for students and colleages exemplified the person she was.
May the comfort of God's grace touch your lives just as Lucella shared that grace with others.
