Malcolm Mcdaniel Obituary

MCDANIEL
Malcolm Reid McDaniel, Col., USAF (Retired), age 85 of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011 after a 14 year struggle with Parkinsons. He was born June 13, 1926, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the younger of two sons of the late Charles and Ethel McDaniel. The family moved to San Antonio in 1938, where Malcolm attended the Alamo Heights Schools, participated in sports, was a 4 year letterman, and was a co-captain of the football team and graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1944. He entered the Navy Flight Program in January and was unable to attend his high school graduation ceremony. During the Navy Program, he was assigned and trained at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, Rice Institute and the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). He played football for Millsaps. He also graduated from the Command and Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Upon being released from active duty, he came back to San Antonio and enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin, where he graduated in 1949 with a BA. Malcolm was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the Silver Spurs Organization while at UT. Upon graduation, he went to work at the Foundation of Applied Research (Southwest Research, where he met Virginia) until late 1950 when he again entered the Navy Flight Program at Pensacola, Florida. Malcolm received his Navy Wings and commission in April, 1952. He was assigned to the VF-94 Fighter Squadron at Alameda NAS, California. On September 6, 1952 he married Virginia Guido in San Antonio. His wife and family came before anything else. She was not only a faithful and loving wife of 55 years, but his soul mate for 58 years. On December 15, 1952, Malcolm boarded the Carrier USS Philippine Sea for a tour of duty in Korea. He completed 59 missions in Corsair aircraft and earned the Air Medal with 5 stars, the Navy Unit Commendation and various other awards. While in Korea, he survived a mid-air collision. His helmet was ½ pink and ½ blue until his first daughter Leslie was born in July of 1953. In August of that year, he returned to San Antonio to pick up his family and went on to Moffett Field, California. He was an instrument instructor there until he was discharged in October, 1954. While in the Navy, Malcolm is credited with having flown the SNJ, F-8F, F-4U, F-5F, T-33 and C-45, but the Bear Cat was his favorite. In 1956, he became a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard in San Antonio. Positions held while in the Guard were Squadron Commander, Deputy Group Operations Officer and Deputy Group Logistics Officer. In 1974, he was transferred to State Headquarters in Austin, as the Director of Logistics, Air National Guard, State of Texas. Malcolm remained in the Air Guard until 1976 and retired as a 'Bird' Colonel with Command Pilot Wings. While in the Texas Air National Guard, he flew the T-33, F-86, F-102, F-84, F-100, U-3 and C-54. Upon returning to San Antonio in 1954, he went to work for his father-in-law at Guido Bros. Construction Co. He was Head Foreman while building the home he gave to Virginia in March of 1955. In 1960 he went to work for Mead Johnson & Co., a division of Bristol Myers, as a Medical Sales Representative. He retired from Mead Johnson in 1986 and enjoyed his retirement for many years, working in his yard and gardening. Malcolm especially liked working with his hands doing cabinet/carpentry work and painting. While reminiscing, he recalls winning the First Soap Box Derby in 1940 in San Antonio and subsequently competed in nationals in Akron, Ohio that fall. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Guido McDaniel; his parents, Charles and Ethel McDaniel; his brother, Bill McDaniel; nephew, Dr. Van Rick McDaniel; sister-in-law, Dora Pisano; and brother-in-law, Louis Guido Jr. Malcolm is survived by his daughters, Leslie Moore, Susan Caddell, and Martha Jo McDaniel; grandchildren, Justin and Bradley Moore, Katie Caddell, and Rodney McDaniel and wife, Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jason; brother-in-law, Cosmo Guido and wife Toni; sister-in-law, Tootsie Guido; nieces, Sheri Hines and Betty Petty; and numerous other family members in Texas, Kansas and Arkansas. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 14, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.

Great Uncle Malcolm, I'm very disappointed that I didn't get to really spend time with you as I should've. I know I would have loved hearing your jokes and stories. Rest in peace

I am so very honored to be a Honary Pallbearer for my wonderful friend Mac. Thank you Martha Jo and Leslie for this honor.
We were not only friends in highschool but we helped the Alamo Heights mules to bi-district football championships in both 1942 and 1943. Between football seasons we were lifeguards at the SA Country Club during each summer.
Mac was an outstanding athlete. When he arrived from Kansas in the 6th grade, I was doing good to make a basketball get to the backboard and in the basket from about the free throw line. Mac could shoot and make a basket from center court!!
Mac was an officer in our Hi Y club which was a forerunner of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
When Mac and I first went to UT we were room mates at the Wichita Apartments, was between the Theta house and the Chi Omega house and just a short walk to the campus.
My wife and I had a wonderful reunion time with Mac and Virginia at the 50th Alamo Heights class renuion in 1994.
He was an outstanding person and will be long remembered.
