Michael Weintraub Obituary

WEINTRAUB
Michael E. Weintraub, D.D.S., M.A.G.D., passed away on December 16, 2012, a month shy of the age of 70 that he so very much wanted to reach. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 17, 1943. He received a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park and a D.D.S. from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. In the summer before his senior year in Dental School, he married the love of his life, Susan Weintraub (nee Tatelbaum). Nine years later, their son Jay was born. Mike served in the Air Force from 1968 - 1970, stationed first at Kelly Air Force Base and then at Lackland. After leaving the Air Force, he decided to stay in San Antonio and began practicing general dentistry, opening his own office in 1971.

Mike was truly a unique human being. He was passionate about so many things. His dedication to excellence in dentistry was widely recognized, focusing not just on the teeth of his patients, but also on becoming an important part of their lives. He made people smile, both by fixing their teeth, but also by telling his endless collection of jokes. Everyone who was acquainted with Mike knew of his love for golf-clearly evident from the clubs and mementoes displayed in his office. He was not particularly interested in beating anyone on the course, but rather, in continuing to perfect his game for his own satisfaction, spending countless hours on the driving range at Oak Hills Country Club, often with his "swing coach" Sue watching behind him. Mike's other interests included studying the violin and reading both fiction and a wide variety of non-fiction, especially as related to psychology and behavior. This provided him with a wealth of information for the newsletters he sent to his patients. Although in his early newsletters he wrote about topics related to dentistry, he quickly shifted to discussing books and articles that he'd read, providing an insight into his unique perspective on life. A side of Mike that was not well known to many people was his generosity, particularly in providing dental care for people in financial difficulty, knowing the importance of restoring their teeth as a start to restoring their self-confidence.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse J. and Florence C. Weintraub. In addition to his loving wife and son and Jay's wife Jill, Mike is survived by his brother, Steven L. Weintraub and his wife Susie and son Jason of Baltimore. He will be greatly missed by his devoted office staff Laura Villarreal, Ruthy Brown, Rowena Busch and Brandon Tigges and by his many friends.

The family is extremely grateful to the wonderful staff in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Hospital and the extraordinary medical care provided by his team of physicians, lead by Dr. Hoan Pho, Dr. Anatole Trakhtenbroit and Dr. Steven Rosenblatt, Dr. David Pederson, and Dr. Bradley Kayser. The support of Dr. Elliot Weser and Dr. Richard Senelick was also invaluable. As a way to honor his memory, please send an e-mail with your favorite Mike story to [email protected].

In lieu of flowers, send donations to Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives, Texas Public Radio, Temple Chai, or the charity of your choice.

Services
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Interment will follow at the Temple Chai section of Mission Burial Park North.

OMG! I was just praising his work on my teeth. In 1968 I remember Michael at the University of Maryland, where I worked in the office of Registration & Admission. I always teased him about
Graduating just on my mouth alone. I don't know why I was compelled to google him at this time. I only wish I did years ago. R.I.P. The best of the best dentist ever

Dr Weintraub was my friend and dentist for over 30 years. He caught me my first pair of ferral cats, that I got when my braces were done. He always have a dirty/funny joke to tell me. I will miss his humor and his laugh. I always told my friends "I love to go to my dentist, he is so funny!" There will never be another like him.

Sue, family, and staff:
My family are all saddened to hear of Mike's passing. For the past 30 years he was much more than a dentist to us all.

I will forever treasure the office visits and the time we spent on the links.

He found true meaning in life through his patients. A brilliant man for sure who was never pretentious.

I will miss him dearly.

We were so sorry to hear of Dr. Weintraub's passing. My family and I have been patients for the last 30 or so years. I had suffered with TMJ for about a year and no one could tell me what was wrong until I found him. He truly gave me back my life when he made my first splint. He was certainly a gifted dentist--never hurt me in any way. And, he kept me laughing through it all. I will certainly miss him and the staff.

We were so saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We've been his patients for over thirty years and truly felt we had become his friends. Each visit was characterized not just by his skilled dentistry, but also by our exchanging of family stories, applauding our children's accomplishments, and of course, at least one of his famous jokes. He touched so many people. We will miss him.

Dr. Weintraub was a very special person and a gifted dentist. I always looked forward to my office visits, knowing he would be ready to share a joke or information about a new book he was reading. A true perfectionist, Dr. Weintraub was not satisfied until he had done the absolute best work possible. Even so, Dr. Weintraub's greatest gift was not his professional skill but his desire and ability to interact with those around him in a meaningful way. He will be greatly missed.

To not only a master dentist, but to a great friend who I will miss dearly. Mike was my golfing buddy, dentist, and psychiologist. The "Henny Youngman" of dentistry. May God bless you and keep you.
