Nancy Denning Obituary

Nancy Denning
December 6, 1941 - February 10, 2025
Mrs. Nancy Lee Friday Denning, 83, passed away on February 10, 2025, in Grapevine, Texas. Born on December 6, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas, Mom's story is a beautiful reflection of her full life in San Antonio. She attended Highlands High School before earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University. Mom met her beloved husband, James David Denning, while they both worked at Joske's department store, downtown. As a teacher, Mom inspired her students with her insatiable intellectual curiosity and clever humor. Her love for history led her to become an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, National Society of New England Women, National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, United Daughters of the Confederacy and First Families of Bexar County. She was a docent for the San Antionio Missions with a special passion for Mission Concepcion and at the Aztec Theater. Mom embraced her life with dad after teaching. They traveled the world and found wonder in every journey. She also had a lifelong love for tennis and could often be found playing at Oak Hills CC and Sonterra CC. Her appreciation for nature extended to birdwatching and gardening. Additionally, she had a keen interest in genealogy. Mom enjoyed her life in San Antonio-working a booth at NIOSA (Night in Old San Antonio), enjoying time with friends and family, and even surprising her children by effortlessly eating a chilipetin pepper off the bush just to see their reactions. Over the years, she was a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church, Shearer Hills Baptist Church, and First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio. Nancy is survived by her children: Nancy Lee Denning Steward, Jane Denning Musser, and James "Jim" Denning; as well as her grandchildren: Ilish DeWitt Martinez, Braden Musser, and Bartholomew "Bart" Musser. She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Denning; and her parents, Louis McCarty Friday and Mary Lee White Friday. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM March 14, 2025, at Shearer Hills Baptist Church, located at 360 Interpark Blvd., San Antonio, Texas 78216.

My condolences to the family. Unfortunately, I haven´t seen Nancy in several years but I hold many fun memories of our days as members of Sonterra Country Club. My husband, Jerry, was a frequent partner of Jim´s on the tennis court and we had many fun tennis trips together! Nancy was an intelligent person but noted for her quick wit! She will be missed by all her knew her.

Some teachers have an outsized impact on the lives of their students and Nancy Denning was of them. I had her for fourth grade at Hidden Forest Elementary School in 1986. I still remember when class discussions would get too far off topic, and she would say "time to stop jaywalking and get back on topic". She is one of the finest and most memorable educators of my life. She will be missed by me and her legion of loyal students.
