Paul Blaylock Loyd Sr .
Former San Antonio resident Paul Blaylock Loyd Sr., a certified pension actuary and insurance broker, died in Austin on Friday, April 23rd, after enjoying a long and fulfilling life. He was 89. Paul and Annabelle, his wife of 21 years, moved to Austin in 2009 to be close to family while he recovered from a devastating fall. Loyd graduated from Texas A&M in 1944 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. During World War II he served as a flight instructor for the B29 bomber. Following his father's death, he worked with his brother, John, in the family business, Loyd Electric. Paul was active in the prison ministry in San Antonio, Alamo Kiwanis Club, the Gideon's and Texas A&M Alumnae activities at Aggie Park, a founding member of Oak Hills Country Club, and a member of Club Giraud. He loved to dance and he and Annabelle were members of the Revelers and Los Alegradores dance clubs. After retirement, Loyd became an accomplished artist. He painted military miniatures, specializing in Napoleonic era chess pieces painted in exquisite detail. His artistic gift brought many awards, including the Medal of Excellence for his chess set of the battle of Austerlitz. He was preceded in death by his daughter Paula, and sisters Annie and Ethel. He is survived by his wife, Annabelle, his children Paul B. Loyd, Jr. and wife Penny; William M. Loyd and wife Stephanie; Kathryn Machuga and husband Bill; and Polly Lines and husband Marcus. Grandchildren Christie Loyd; Kelly Loyd and wife Shawnna; Casey Loyd; William Loyd, Jr. and wife Sarah; Patrick Loyd; Jessica Requa, Matthew Requa and Sarah Requa; and Perry Lines and Harrison Lines. Great grandchildren Jackson, Emma Rose, Charlotte, and Cash Loyd. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 3rd. at First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio, Texas where Paul was a member for over 60 years. After the service the family will receive friends at the Club Giraud. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the Fisher House, 3623 George C. Paul Loyd was my uncle and one of my heroes. He was truly a gentleman with a quick wit and and heart as big as Texas. My heartfelt condolences go out to Annabelle, Paul Jr., Bill, his brother, John, and all other family and friends who loved him. He will be truly missed.
