PHILLIP HARTMANN Obituary

Phillip Dale Hartmann, of San Antonio and Blanco, died early in the morning on December 23rd, losing his long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Phil was born in San Antonio to Francis and Gertrude Weber Hartmann. While being raised in San Antonio, Phil was never far from his roots at the ranch in Kendall County. He graduated from Churchill High School and received his degree from Texas State University, then moved back to San Antonio to begin his worklife.

Phil was an underwriter who retired after a long career at USAA. He was the longstanding President of the Hermann Sons Lodge at Twin Sisters who valued his German heritage and loved hunting, fishing and showing visitors around the ranch on his Mule. Phil was a handsome man with a sunny disposition in spite of his health issues, a melodious voice, and always had an uplifting anecdote to bring laughter and smiles to anyone, anytime, anywhere. He will always be remembered as a talented man known for his playful and thoughtful poems on any occasion.

A lover of hats, Phil owned over a hundred, ranging from Stetsons to canvas ballcaps to wide brimmed straw hats. No one could TOP him on his wild assorted hat collection.

Phil is survived by his mother, Gertrude Hartmann; his sons, Nick and wife, Karen, Louis and wife, Sara; fiancée, Sherri Vee Thrailkill; brothers, Stephen and wife, Georgia, Guy and wife, Linda; sister, Laurie; grand- children: Sara, Katie and Jayce; nephews Edward and wife, Molly, John and wife, Shannon and Cale; nieces Shannon and husband, Giorgio Zambon, and Kristin and husband, Steve Keller; nine grandnieces and nephews.

A public visitation requiring masks and social distancing will be held Tuesday, December 29th, from 2:00-4:00PM at Crofts-Crow Funeral Home in Blanco. The Mass of Christian Burial and internment at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Twin Sisters will be private due to the pandemic.

I did not know Phillip Dale Hartmann much to my loss. He graduated a year before me at Churchill & many years before me at SWT. We were both in the financial industry and apparently share a love of hats. One of my daily joys is jumping in my Mule and feed and talk to our livestock. On the occasion when friends come in from out of town that is the mode of transportation! I wish I had known him, our condolences......

My condolences to the Hartmann family. Ever the professional. Phil’s positive demeanor, humor, and friendliness to all of his co-workers at USAA added fun to underwriting P&C insurance policies. I have fond memories of working with Phil and I’m sure he will be missed. May he Rest In Peace.

My heart breaks for the loss of Phil so soon after he achieved such happiness. He had so many plans for the future that have all come to nought. When he checked in to the hospital Phil had no idea it was his final stay. My prayers are for Phil's mother, Gertrude, as no mother should lose her child, and Sherri, whose dreams will be unfulfilled.
God bless all of Phil's family.

He was the love of my life and we had so many plans for the future. I will miss him dearly. I am sorry for his siblings, sons and old friends. We cannot forget the fun he had with all of the above. That is what I want to remember. His smile and goodness was opulent, although he was humble to a fault. Phil loved his dad and respected him to the nth degree. His mother, Gertrude was his priority. I loved your son Mrs. H, like no other. I know he felt the same love for me.

I was honored to be one of Phil’s friends. I have known Phil for over forty years and he is the kindest man I’ve ever known. Phil was witty and had instantaneous humor. Phil had a really big heart. His family meant more to him than anything. Phil was a gentle giant and will be missed dearly. Until we meet on the other side, Rest In Peace, my friend. I love you.

Dear Phil and Hartmann Family,

I am so very proud and honored to be a part of such a wonderful family. I'm a part of such an amazing legacy by being married to one of Phil's greatest gifts, his son Louis. Phil kept me laughing and I rarely saw him without a big smile on his face. He adored his granddaughters and grandson so very much. He'd give them the world if he could, though he came quite close. I'm saddened that he won't meet Lou and I's children but they'll know all about him and what a great man he is to everyone he meets. Phil always said he was proud of me and treated me as if I was his own. That truly meant the world to me and still does. I love you Phil, you are definitely like a second dad to me, and you'll always be in my heart forever.

I have known Phil for 60 years. He was a special guy for sure! He had the knack of making you smile or laugh even if you didn’t want to! If you saw that little grin start to creep up on his face, you knew some fun was going to happen(especially in grade school)! My sincerest condolences to all of the Hartmann family. We have lost one of the good guys.
