R. Jones Obituary

R Roy Jones II
March 6, 1933 - January 7, 2025
Roy, affectionately known as Gramps, passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2025 at the age of 91. Born on March 6, 1933 in Abilene Texas to Robert W. Jones and Helen Stribling, Jones relocated to San Antonio in1939 where he was a lifelong resident. Roy attended Alamo Heights and graduated early from Jefferson High School where he was a member on the state champion football team. He attends The University of Texas where he ran hurdles on the track and field team and earned his Civil Engineering degree. Following graduation Roy met Margaret (Peggy) and he was instantly smitten. The two wrote to each other while he was stationed at Ft. Churchill. His responsibility was to construct missile launch sites for the Army Corps of Engineers. After coming out of active duty he and Peggy married September 7, 1957. They were married for 64 years. Raised two beautiful and successful daughters and lived a full and happy life.

Roy started his career in concrete when he joined his dad and brother in the family business RWJones and Sons Inc. The small family business focused on residential foundations and street reconstruction. After the opportunity to rebuild the main runway at the San Antonio International Airport, he expanded to commercial retail projects, multifamily housing and tilt wall office buildings. Through his hard work and unrelenting dedication, he became a pioneer in the industry and expanded the company into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. RW Jones and Sons has left a footprint all over San Antonio and surrounding counties. Roy based his company philosophy on loyalty to his employees and was present 6 days a week for 65 years until the age of 91. He coined the term "Concrete is beautiful."

He sat on many boards of construction entities, banks, horse shows and was a repeat President of the Oak Hills Country Club where he also sat on the board of Governors. He was a member of the vestry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and school board and lead to the revitalization of the only Montessori faith-based school in San Antonio. His philanthropic focus was wide ranging from UT and UTSA to Hillsdale University, his church, school, and local veterans' groups and businesses.

Roy's life was marked by his passion for helping others, his boundless generosity, and his love of family and friends. He was a scratch golfer and spent much of his social time on the course with friends or holding court and playing cards at the 19th hole. Peggy and Roy explored much of the world together and enjoyed meeting new people weather on the golf course or on the high seas. They were original season ticket holders for the San Antonio Spurs and were remembered for their weekly game date nights. They cherished time spent hunting quail and dove in the Valley or at Black Creek Ranch. Another joy of theirs was to go on family sailing vacations.

Roy is preceded in death by his wife Peggy, siblings Robert W. Jones Jr., George Jones, and Nancy Cheever. Roy is survived by daughter Catherine Moreno husband Mario, Carol Naegelin husband Martin, his cherished grandchildren Leah Sali husband Ronald, Travis Adams wife Rebekah, Ashley Naegelin, and Macey Purdom, husband Myles. His 5 great grandsons Brodie, Max, Walker, Wyatt and Rhett. Sister-In-Law Sarah Jones Not only is he survived by blood family is survived by his family at RW Jones, Oak Hills Country Club and St Paul's Episcopal Church and School.
