Raul Moreno Obituary
Raul Javier Moreno, Jr. of Arlington, Texas surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on June 23, 2022 at the age of 55 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Laredo, Texas on November 13, 1966 to Raul J. and Elva Moreno. He was raised in San Antonio; attending St. George Episcopal School, William P. Hobby Middle School and Tom C. Clark High School. During his youth he attended St. Matthew Catholic Church and participated in CYO baseball and basketball programs through the church. He was a four year member of the Clark golf team.
He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Environmental Design, where he was a member of Tau Sigma Delta – Alpha Alpha chapter; an honor society in Architecture and Allied Arts. He then attended Arizona State University receiving a Masters in Urban Design. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects.
Raul Javier became a LEED Accredited Professional with a Building Design and Construction Certification and was employed as an architect by the Corp of Engineers at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. A promotion moved him to Albuquerque, New Mexico. While with the Corp of Engineers, he was involved in various projects. The one he was most proud of was being the Project Manager who designed and oversaw the construction of the Border Patrol Administration Office off of Interstate-10 in Sierra Blanca, Texas. He moved to a position as an architect with the more prestigious General Service Administration Regional Office in Fort Worth, Texas and thus the move to Arlington, Texas. His wife, Yvonne (a diehard Cowboys fan) told him they would move only if they bought tickets to the Dallas Cowboys home games; which he obliged. Raul Javier was the Project Manager for various projects with GSA. There were three projects which gave him great pride. One was the design, remodel and construction of the Administration Offices of the Juarez Bridge. Another was the design, remodel and construction of the Administration Offices of the International Bridge. Both projects were in Laredo, Texas. His last completed job was as Project Manager of the new state of the art Federal Courthouse in San Antonio, Texas.
Raul Javier was kindest person you would ever meet and made friends with anyone he met. He was an avid cyclist and used that passion to establish various rides for cancer awareness. Every year his cycling team from Arlington would head to Iowa to participate in the annual RAGBRI, which lasts for seven days as they ride through the state camping along the way. During his first treatment, he participated in RAGBRI and used it raise awareness for cancer and advocate for people battling cancer. Next year his team will be dedicating their ride to him. In 2019, he established the Ride of Silence in
Laredo, Texas to honor cyclists who have been injured or lost on the road. He was a found member of Team FED-UP, a group of federal employees who raised money for various charities through their riding.
He was a ninth generation native Texan. His ancestors, Don Jose Francisco Cordova Moreno and Captain Tomas Sanches Uribe, along with others were awarded land grants from Queen Isabel of Spain which founded Laredo, Texas.
Raul Javier was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Antonio S. and Carmen Moreno and maternal grandparents Jose and Concepcion B. Lemus. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Yvonne; sons Samuel A. Moreno, Martin Gerardo III and Michael (Shannon) Gerardo; his parents; sister Laura Moreno; brother David (Jackie) Moreno; in-laws Gonzalo and Thelma Rodriguez; also numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
A visitation and rosary was held on Monday, July 18 at Wade Funeral Home; 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway; Arlington, Texas 76013.
A funeral mass will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, August 1 at St. Matthew Catholic Church; 10703 Wurzbach Road; San Antonio, Texas 78230.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN, 38105 in Raul Javier's name.
He never wanted any child going through the treatments he was going through.
