Robert Hemp Obituary

HEMP
Robert Herman Hemp, age 86, passed away July 15, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. Bob was born September 23, 1927 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Ella and Herman Hemp, who ran a dairy farm in Globe, Wisconsin. He entered the United States Air Force in March 1952 and served in the field of aircraft maintenance for 52 years. The first 27 years were spent in active duty service, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in July 1979. From 1979 to 1982, he became a full-time student and realized his dream to earn a college degree. He graduated from Texas Lutheran College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Marketing. In 1982 he entered the US Air Force Civil Service working for 25 years at the Headquarters of Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base. In his free time, Bob enjoyed gardening and making sure he had one of the nicest yards on the block. He was a devoted, lifetime member of the Lutheran Church; serving on the Usher Team at King of Kings for more than 20 years. His family could always count on him to cheer for the Green Bay Packers, play cards with anyone who was willing to lose, barbeque an awesome rib eye and devour any ice cream that was presented to him. Bob married Jean Middleton, his high school sweetheart in 1952. They enjoyed 62 years of wedded bliss. He was the loving father of son, James; daughter-in-law, Anne and grandchildren, Lucas, Samantha, and Robert. He was also the loving father of daughter, Janie; son-in-law, Dean Reinhardt and grandchildren, Joshua and Emma. Bob is also survived by his sister, Marian Vornholt of Neillsville, Wisconsin.

Mr. Hemp was indeed a fine role model for me. He always had a smile on his face when he greeted me and my family at King of Kings. As I grew older he taught me the art of ushering people in and out of church. He also taught me the art of caring for people regardless if you knew their name or not. My prayers go out to his family.

I'm sorry to have missed your services but I learned of your passing too late. Farewell and Godspeed, my friend and blessings to your family. I'll always remember you and your mastery of aircraft maintenance, and willingness to share your knowledge and keep everyone on an even keel from airmen to generals.

T-46A Next Generation Trainer [NGT]

Bob Laymon

July 23, 2014

During the T-46A Next Generation Trainer [NGT] 'exercise' in acquiring a Tweet replacement, Chief Bob was a key Mx advisor. I recall one of our many trips to Fairchild-Republic on Long Island, NY ...I threw my back out of place [incapacitated]. While driving to our TDY quarters at the Freeport Motor Inn & Boatel [remember "Joey" Buttafuoco?] the CHECK ENGINE master caution light came ON. I went straight to bed ...Bob Hemp took off on a hike to find a filling station ...1½ miles back towards the Long Island parkway, and walked back, with one quart of engine oil. To Bob, no big deal. And you know, he never claimed that quart of oil on his travel voucher.

He served his country during two combat tours in Southeast Asia: KC-135 'Young Tiger' FOL and again as superintendent of the 366th Gunfighter FMS at Da Nang [Rocket City].
