Robert Schmidt Obituary

Robert Schmidt was born on April 9, 1957 in Amarillo, TX to proud parents Mary Winsett Schmidt (on her birthday!) and Charles Schmidt and sister Ewing Schmidt McCulloch. He grew up riding horses and fishing at the Palo Duro Canyon with Ewing and cousin Owen Winsett, played tennis and began his lifelong journey of faith through Young Life at Tascosa High School, then went on to graduate from The University of Texas at Austin. At UT, Robert met the men who would become his best friends, loved life as a Fiji brother and followed his father and grandfather's footsteps into a degree in Civil Engineering. Not long after college, Robert met the love of his life, Jenni McCaleb, forging a rich marriage that spanned over four decades of commitment, growth and laughter.
Robert and Jenni poured their lives into their six children, Hanna Schmidt Balemi, Sarah Carraway Maag, Emma Catherine Schmidt, Charles McCaleb Schmidt, Abigail Schmidt Keairnes and Joanna Nell Schmidt. The Schmidt world has since grown to include sons-in-law Ryan Balemi, Michael Paul Maag, and Peter Keairnes, and daughter-in-law Carlie Davis Schmidt, each of whom Robert loved deeply. Grandchildren Sadie and Jack Balemi; Warner, Lucy and Eden Maag; and Lennox and Murphy Schmidt will forever know Robert as their beloved "Hap" (short for either Haphazard or Happy Birthday, depending on the day).
Above all else, Robert valued friendship. More than just an accessory to life, he believed in the power of relationships to shape and guide the people we become. In the 1980s, Robert co-founded Overland Partners, alongside his three best friends as an experiment in living life together in the context of business, and served as partner and principal there for more than 20 years. In the years that followed, Robert was passionate about sharing the tools he gathered through life, relationships and business, offering mentorship and leadership coaching to a wide range of people across the country, from young entrepreneurs, to faith leaders and CEOs.
By the many people Robert loved and was loved by, he will be remembered as a laughing storyteller, an honest mentor, a curious seeker, and above all, a loyal friend to the end.
Robert's life lives on through his wife Jenni, sister Ewing, uncle, aunt, cousins, children, grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews and all who have been touched by his generosity of spirit.
All are invited to join Robert's family and friends for an outdoor celebration of life at Live Oak Ranch (26 Dierks Rd, Spring Branch, TX ) on Thursday, September 5th at 10:30am. Please carpool where possible to ease parking and feel free to wear ranch attire.

I was Robert's Vistage Launch Chair. He always asked great questions and helped his members dig deeper. I did not know much of his religious side until I went to his remembrance. I thought I knew him! Wow.

Ewing, I am so sorry to have learned of your brother's passing. I googled your name today as I have been wanting to connect with you, and I was so sad to know Robert had passed away. I have some fond memories of long ago of visiting you and your family in Texas and traveling to the Santa Fe area. I remember Robert with a big smile on his face and a great sense of humor. So long ago, but seems like "yesterday."

I met Robert and Jenni at a conference in Texas. The amazing warmth, kindness, and generosity they showed to all those at the gathering was amazing. Over a year since then, I have often thought back upon my time with them, as they have served as an inspiration to me in the kindness we can show strangers. I am so sorry for your loss.
The pastor at my daddy`s funeral said something that brought a lot of comfort to my broken heart. I share it with you all now, as I hope that it will do the same for you. He said,"As long as you have memories of someone, they never really die."

My sincere condolences to Jenni, their children and the many friends and loved ones that attended Thursdays celebration at Live Oak Ranch in Spring Branch, Texas. Thank you Rev. Brit Carpenter, family and friends for sharing how Robert impacted your lives. Robert was in his 4th year with Vistage Worldwide as a San Antonio Group Chair assisting SMB owners, CEOs and senior executives in becoming better leaders, making better decisions. As many of you know, Robert was the master questioner and had a special gift in enabling us to share some of our deepest feelings. By being vulnerable himself and at times going first, Robert enabled each of us to do the same. RIP

So many good memories of the short amount of time I was blessed to know Robert. He treated everyone he met as a friend and genuinely cared for the people he met. There are many great things that could be said about him, they can all be summed up with this...when you were with Robert you wanted to be a better person. You will be missed but you left a big mark.

Robert was a friend and mentor to me while working together at StratMedical (GreenLight) - His encouragement as a board member over the years as we continued to work though our challenges meant more to me than he ever knew. Those of us that are still with GreenLight are grateful for his contribution as a board member!
My greatest admiration was he also showed the love of Jesus to each and every one he met. I will miss him greatly but know that I will see him again in Heaven! Praying for Peace and Comfort for Jenni and the family during this time!

Robert was a man of deep faith who loved Jesus, his family and his friends.
I will always treasure our friendship of over 50 years. Robert delegated to someone else in his company a meeting with his largest client who was coming to see him from a foreign country, and left SanAntonio to come be with me when our youngest daughter as in infant was in the hospital in ICU. I will never forget it, and that is a prime example of what friendships meant to him . The good news is that we all know where Robert is now.

What a blessing Robert was to so many! So blessed by his wisdom and friendship. So blessed to have been with him on 8/18 and to get a big hug and an "I love you."
