Ruby Herrington Obituary

HERRINGTON
Ruby Anna Lily Schultz Herrington, 90, loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. She was born on September 1, 1923, in the German community of New Berlin, Texas. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Schultz, the fourth of five children. She is survived by her two sisters; Ellen Howard, Nadine Helmke and husband Glenwood; two daughters, Joni Holder and husband Chris, Sheryl Lipscomb and husband Rob; grandchildren, Megan and husband Dan Chandler, Christopher Holder, Katie and Kevin Lipscomb; and by many adoring nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruby moved to San Antonio where she worked at Fairmaid Bakery. It was while she was on the cake floor that she spotted Jim, the 'bread twister'. They dated steadily before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII. While Jim was home on leave, they married and later moved to Houston where he attended U of H. Jim's career in Geology took them to Jackson, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Midland , Tyler, and Plano before retiring to Bulverde where the family gathered for many holidays at their beautiful hill country home. Ruby and Jim, lovingly referred to as Oma and Grandad, loved traveling and took numerous cruises and trips to Australia, Hong Kong, and Europe. Ruby loved to serve others - she volunteered at the Bulverde Food Pantry for thirteen years and served in many capacities at the Bulverde Senior Center. She was a fixture in the kitchen at St. Paul Lutheran Church and a faithful member of the Tired and Retired group. Following Jim's death in March 2012, she made her home at Independence Hill, making many new friends and participating in numerous fun activities...especially Monday afternoon poker! She will be remembered for her many lifelong friendships that span the country, her legendary pies with their homemade crusts, her love for the San Antonio Spurs, her sense of humor, and curious life observations referred to as "Ruby's Gems". The family would like to thank her beloved relatives, St Paul and Senior Center friends, hairdresser and friend Nellie Garcia, Timberwood Park neighbors, and Ruby's caregivers in San Antonio and Houston for their love and support over the years. Visitation will be Sunday, January 19 at Porter Loring Mortuary North from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
