Tommy Griggs Obituary
February 4, 1924 - March 22, 2023
Tommy Henry Griggs was born February 4, 1924, in Cotton Valley, Texas and died March 22, 2023.
He married the love of his life, Barbara Cypert, on January 28,1945 in Ft Worth. Soon after they married, Tommy entered the army and was among the first troops to occupy Tokyo. In the early 1950's Tommy and Barbara relocated to San Antonio to begin his 40-year career with Luby's.
Tommy's long-time hobby was golf. He played golf through 7 decades. He finally had to quit playing when arthritis prevented him from gripping the clubs. Golf took him on many adventures traveling with friends to play various courses across the US and internationally.
After retiring from Luby's, Tommy and Barbara traveled the world. Their travels included many cruises, river cruises, land tours, and safaris. On one of their trips, he was able to return to Tokyo and visit the site of the hospital he had worked in during World War II. Even though the hospital was no longer there, he was able to see how the area had developed in the decades since.
Tommy was preceded in death by his mother, Effie Lee Ellis; his father, Jerry Franklin Griggs; 6 siblings; wife of 76 years, Barbara; infant son, Mark; daughter, Teri Diane Griggs; and granddaughter, Terri Elizabeth Sullivan.
Tommy is survived by son, Gary; daughter, Tracy Sullivan (Brian); granddaughter, Shelby Kling (Mike); great-granddaughter, Kennedy; and great grandson, Ellis.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Amada Senior Living, and Vitas Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
