BARBARA HURTIK

HURTIK, BARBARA MARY The recent passing inTemecula at age 90 of Barbara Mary Hurtik (neé Cardew) has been the occasion for sorrow but also for the celebration of a long life filled to the brim with loving warmth and solicitude. She was an unerring discoverer of the good in everyone. All who knew her bore witness to her selfless concern for her widespread family and extensive circle of friends. A high school class valedictorian in Royal Oak, Michigan and an English major at the University of Michigan where she met her husband Emil, Barbara used her lively engagement with a wide spectrum of interests to enrich all with whom she came into contact. During that time, she took great pride in her nighttime job as a riveter for the war effort. As well as teaching for many years at Lewis Junior High School, San Diego, she was untiring in her pursuit of many and varied literary and musical interests, incuding eighty years of piano playing and regular visits to the San Diego Symphony, Opera, and Old Globe Theater. She also enjoyed the lively discussions in a number of book clubs in California and Prescott, Arizona. One of her greatest passions was strolling on her beloved Del Mar and Torrey Pines beaches, collecting sea shells. An avid bird watcher, Barbara had a special fondness for owls. For many years, she was an active member of the League of Women Voters, hand counting votes until the wee hours in the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy presidential election. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Emil Hurtik of Temecula; her daughters, Karla Flay of Rhodes, Greece and Stephanie Ferneyhough of Stanford, California; and son-in-law, Brian Ferneyhough.
