Dennis McCarty Obituary

McCARTY, DENNIS R. The Professional Land Surveyor ' s community lost one of their own with the passing of Dennis R. McCarty on February 2, 2004. He passed away peacefully at his home in Solana Beach with his family at his side. Dennis was born on October 23, 1937 in New Bedford, Massachusetts and moved to San Diego with his family at the age of 12. He attended San Dieguito High School and graduated in 1955. While in High School at the age of 16 he obtained an entry level field and office position with the Civil Engineering and Surveying firm at Dewey, Burk & Fefferman in Rancho Santa Fe. This experience triggered a spark in Dennis to pursue the land surveying profession which he did until his passing. He obtained a Professional Land Surveyor ' s license from the State of California at an early age and provided professional surveying services throughout San Diego County for almost 50 years. He earned the respect and deep admiration of his clients and fellow survey professionals due to his personal integrity, gentle demeanor and accurate work. His technical knowledge and field experience in land surveying made him a great teacher to his co-workers which has inspired over 20 of his students to seek out the grueling education and licensing efforts necessary to establish a career in the survey field he practiced and loved. Many of his prior students and co-workers continued in the Land Surveying profession and are now the current leaders within the surveying industry in San Diego County. He was an employee of Rancho Santa Fe Engineering Company from the early 1970s and went on to become a principle with Buck McCarty Engineering Company of Escondido from the mid 1970s until the 1980s when he formed the surveying firm of Santa Fe Surveys in Solana Beach. The survey markers set by Dennis over the years delineating property boundaries can be found throughout San Diego County and will be relied upon by fellow surveyors retracing his foot steps for many years to come. He is admired by his friends and fellow professionals for his commitment to his family, friends and his profession through unwavering kindness, humor and dedication. He will be deeply missed by all those people who had the opportunity to know him. Dennis is survived by his lovely daughters Erin McCarty of Solana Beach, and Carey Hoffman of Tennessee; his sister Betty Cutsinger of San Diego and his brother Michael McCarty of Oceanside. A Memorial service for Dennis will be held Saturday, February 7, at 11 a.m. at the St. James Church, 625 So. Nardo Ave. in Solana Beach with a following reception celebrating Dennis ' life at the family residence in Rancho Santa Fe. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dennis R. McCarty to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society or the American Cancer Society. I was greatly saddened to hear of Dennis' untimely death. I was a San Dieguito classmate of his and missed his presence at our last reunion in September. Although we hadn't been in touch over the years, I still remember him fondly. The beautiful obituary is testimony of his value as a family member and his worth as a professional. It is certainly true that one still lives as long as he/she is in our memories, and Dennis is remembered lovingly.

I have known Dennis since the early 1970's. I worked for him initially at Rancho Santa Fe Engineering and also at Buck McCarty, and later knew him socially. Dennis was a quiet and sincere friend and I always enjoyed my friendship with him. He will be missed.

i am deeply sadden TO READ THE dennis has died. I was AN employee OF BUCK, MCCARTY AND ASSOCIATES FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IN 1977. I REMEMDER DENNIS AS THE QUIET MAN THAT RAN THE COMPANY. THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 20 EMPLOYEES WORKING AT THAT TIME. DENNIS ALWAYS SEEMED TO BE THE CALM, QUIET, ONE THAT KEPT ALL OF US WORKING, ANSWERING OUR NUMEROUS QUESTIONS ABOUT SURVEYING. I.E. "DENNIS I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS DEED, DENNIS I CAN'T FIGURE THIS DEED OUT, DENNIS THIS DEED DOES NOT CLOSE, DENNIS HOW DO I PRORATE BACK IN THIS CORNER? (YOU SURVEYORS/CIVILS WILL UNDERSTAND) HE WAS A TEACHER/INSTRUCTOR/FRIEND. I WILL MISS HIM

I was very sad to read in this morning's paper that Dennis had passed away.

I first met Dennis when he was married to Barbara and they selected me as Carey's Godmother after she was born. After they divorced I remained friends with Dennis - I last saw him several years ago when my husband and I joined him for dinner one evening in La Jolla and then we somehow lost touch with one another.

Dennis was a great man and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The obituary was very well written and proof that he was admired and left a wonderful legacy.

My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Sincerely, Beverly Zukor
