Grace Cronin Godefroy, 89, of
Del Mar, CA, passed away August 27 of natural causes. Grace was born on November 16, 1933, to Dr. Edward J. Cronin and Martha Goulding Cronin in Brighton, MA. She was the fourth of five children, who have all predeceased her.
Grace was a home economics major at Regis College in Weston, MA. Creative and resourceful, she distinguished herself as a talented seamstress with a discerning eye. In her senior year she met her future husband, Pierre Godefroy, on a blind date to a Regis dance.
Upon graduation from Regis in 1955, she volunteered with the Regis Lay Apostolate program to teach for a year at St. Michaels Indian School near Window Rock, AZ. When she returned to Brighton she and Pierre, then an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, were married. As a Navy wife, Grace relocated eleven times to eight states over the next 21 years. Since Pierre was frequently at sea, the adaptability and self-sufficiency that she learned early in life served her very well. She used her home economics skills to make each house a home.
She and Pierre had three children; Peter, Gigi and Michelle. She was a devoted mother, dedicated to her children and to their wide-ranging interests; from bird watching, stargazing, and scouting to reading and art; from football, soccer and surfing to cheerleading and gymnastics.
Grace was an active school and community volunteer. She served as a volunteer at Del Mar Heights grade school; president of Torrey Pines High School PTA; president of the Del Mar Garden Club; a driver for Meals on Wheels; a volunteer at Christie's House, a resource for Aids victims; a Baby Cuddler at Scripps La Jolla Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She was employed by the San Diego County Fair as the Volunteer Coordinator and was also employed as an assistant costumer at the Starlight Theater in San Diego.
A faithful parishioner at St. James Catholic Church in
Solana Beach, CA., Grace served many years there as a coordinator of the Prayer Worship program and as a member of the Funeral Reception team.
Throughout her life, Grace remained strong and stoic, gracious and kind. She enjoyed gardening and sailing with her husband.
She is survived by her husband, Pierre, her three children, Peter, Gigi and Michelle and her four grandchildren: Christopher and Kevin Godefroy, Lucas Gain and Grace DeWeese.
A Celebration Of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 25 at St. James Catholic Church in
Solana Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Grace's memory to Regis College at
