Hazel Moore

MOORE, HAZEL Hazel Moore, 94, died early Sunday morning at the home she helped build in National City. Hazel was born on a farm near Sioux Falls, South Dakota on June 1, 1911. Her father, Byron Goodall, died of a burst appendix when she was two. After her mother remarried, the Jones family moved to National City, where Hazel met Cy Holmes (her future husband) in the 5th grade. They both went to Sweetwater High School in the 1920's, and they were married at the First United Methodist Church in National City on August 4, 1928. During the Depression, Hazel raised her children while Cy worked as a mechanic. They lived in Ramona and on Ocean View Blvd until WWII, when they moved into war housing in Linda Vista. After the war, as materials became available, they built their home on K Avenue in National City. Soon after, they purchased and operated a Richfield (now ARCO) service station on 5th Avenue and National City Blvd. The station was sold after Cy died in 1967, and Hazel worked as a bookkeeper at Locators Security, where she met George Moore. They were married from 1971 until George's death in 1999. Hazel was active in the Methodist Church and in the Pythian Sisters of California. She outlived her brother and two sisters, and is survived by both of her children, Cy Holmes, Jr. of Elk Grove, and Diane Helm, who lived with her. She had four stepchildren, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Berge-Roberts Mortuary, 807 National City Blvd. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church, 242 East 8th Street (8th & C) in National City.Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
