ISABELLE GAMMON Obituary

GAMMON, ISABELLE FORSYTHE January 15, 1923 to July 24, 2010 Isabelle "Izzy" Forsythe Gammon passed away peacefully at San Diego Hospice on the morning of July 24th after a courageous battle with cancer. Born January 15, 1923, Izzy spent her youth in Ohio and, as President of Alpha Phi, graduated from Ohio State University. After moving to San Diego, she met, fell in love with and married James M. Gammon, then a young Naval officer. Together Jim and Izzy raised four children as Jim's career moved the family from coast to coast, yet always finding their way back to Coronado. After Jim's retirement from the Navy in the late 1970's, they spent many years traveling the world and settling in the Coronado Cays. She and her husband were active members of the Coronado Cays Yacht Club where Izzy served many terms on the C-Gulls, the womens auxiliary of the Club. In addition, she was a member of the Childrens Home Society, the Coronado Republican Womens Club as well as the Garden Club. Izzy found much joy in being a cherished member of Chapter D, Coronado of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and her bridge groups, which remained to be a highlight in her last years of life. Upon moving from Coronado to St. Paul's Villa's in 2006, she continued to participate in P.E.O. and her bridge games. Izzy was the rock of her family, a loving mother and a most generous and kind friend to many throughout the years. She is survived by her dear brother Thomas Forsythe of Ohio, a son Rex Gammon, three daughters, Leita Gammon, Celeste Holthaus, Nannette Gammon and five grandchildren. Services will be private. The family suggests donations to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103 or Cottey College, 1000 W. Austin, Nevada, Mo. 64772 wmaclaren @cottey.edu.

I had the priviledge of being with Izzy and helping her two days a week for the last three months. It was such a special time. Just doing the simple things of every day we both got closer to the essence of things. She was such a strong person dealing with the limitations that were imposed on her. Not easy, but she did it with such courage, patience and largeness of heart! We enjoyed each other. I took her to Balboa Park the Sunday before she went into the hospice facility and the last day I was with her at St. Paul's, we went for a walk and saw her favorite sculpture in the neighborhood, of a little boy lifting his sister up to get a drink of water from a drinking fountain. Such precious sweetness! We marvelled. The icing on the cake was the day she found out that I had graduated from the P.E.O. Sisterhood's women's college, Cottey College in Nevada, MO. I have been so enriched for having known and served her at such a special time in her life.
