James Winslow Obituary

Winslow, James Carl "Jim" CARLSBAD -- James (Jim) Carl Winslow, 98, born near Dows, Iowa on September 11, 1915 passed away peacefully on October 7, 2013 in Carlsbad. Jim was born on the family farm, the 3rd of four sons to Earl and Lydia Winslow. Jim earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1937 from Aeronautical University in Chicago. He moved to Seattle, then California, and worked for Vultee, Douglas, Boeing, and Northrop aircraft companies before striking out on his own to develop products associated with the aircraft industry. He formed Arcadia based Winslow Products Engineering during the 1950' and 60's. Jim was an entrepreneur and inventor, building a successful business before retiring in 1969. He had many interests throughout his life, always trying to improve on any product or aspect of life he deemed needing it. Like Alexander Graham Bell, his motto could have been "Let's try it - and note the results." He was active in his communities of Sierra Madre and Carlsbad and in his church. He and Alice participated in many bridge club groups as well as square and ballroom dancing and loved Dixieland music, attending many jazz festivals yearly. He produced many landscape paintings, loved photography, helped to start the Carlsbad Community Band, hybridized roses, and designed and built many new products- including in his latter years, farm vegetable planters which were sold nationally, motor home parts and player piano roll perforators. Jim was preceded to glory by his beloved wife, Alice, who went to be with the Lord in 1996. He is survived by his brother, Robert Winslow; his daughter, Barbara (Richard) McDowell; three grandchildren, David, Mary, and Amy McDowell, grand- daughter-in-law, Anna; and four great-grand- children, Meghan, Sarah, Elijah, and Jonah McDowell. A memorial service is planned for 1pm, on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St., Carlsbad, Ca. 92008. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Missions Ministry at Carlsbad Community Church.

Sending prayers for comfort and peace. No matter how long we have our parents, a giant hole is left in our heart when they go on to a peaceful rest.

Jim personified the term "gentleman". His quiet smile will be missed.

My condolences, Barb. He lived a long life! There are very few of us who still have parents who are alive. David Childers once said that when both parents are gone, one's perspective on life really changes! Peace.
