Jan Spencer Gobel September 27, 1948 - March 5, 2017 San Diego The first son of Navy Commander Carl Gobel and wife Margaret, Jan was born in Oakland, California and spent his early years in Japan where his father was stationed. Jan passed away under hospice care in San Diego, California where he had lived on and off for many years. A consummate salesman, he spent his working life selling award-winning children's books and was the face of Green Tiger Press, Laughing Elephant, Picture Book Studio and Ars Edition. He was preceded in death by his parents and longtime companion, Virginia Barbey. At Jan's request, his ashes will be scattered at Windansea Beach in La Jolla at sunset on Friday, March 17th.

I looked Jan up in the Pt. Loma Yearbook to see how young and handsome he was and as he remained throughout his life. His photo is right next to mine as a 1966 graduate. Interestingly, he named his son Glenn which is my maiden name. Anyone who cares about children's literature as Jan did would be described as fun loving, young at heart and interested in the education of the next generation. I missed out on not knowing him better and wish to express my sincere condolences to those who loved Jan and to those fellow Pointers remembering him fondly.
