To my Master Teacher from San Marcos HS 1989, I thank you for helping shape my teaching career and reminding me to have the students do the work! We were polar opposites on political ideology but always laughed together and I appreciate all the great lessons and inspiration you gave me. Your passion and wit with the students was contagious and helped so many young people learn to think! You left us way too soon. Thank you and God Bless.

I had the privilege of officiating many football games with Rip. I found him to be athletic, intelligent and friendly and one of the best football officials in San Diego. Football officiating in San Diego is better because of Rip.

Rip wanted everyone with whom he interacted to feel able to reach her or his full potential. He was a lifelong champion of equity for women. Three more little girls in Malawi now have desks, in remembrance of Rip, where they can do school work in order to become strong, independent women.

Dear Dad, I miss your laugh, the sparkle in your eyes, your sentimentality in song, your sweetness. I loved staying at your apartment on Tamarack and the dinners you cooked, your bonsais and posters and how you loved to hear the train whistle and be near the ocean. You taught me to throw a ball, to snorkel, to play whiffle ball on the beach. You taught me poker and I taught you Scopa. I always loved hearing you explain the news to me and plots of movies. You gave hearty hugs and let me know that you were proud of me and that you loved me. I am sorry that you did not get to read the LA Times in your final years. I tried to get these for you but could not. You counseled me on teaching and modeled organization and preparation. I will never forget you telling us the story of the Tortoise and the Hare and the funny noises you could make. You did your best to be our Dad. My love for you and memories are deep in my heart. Thank you for giving me life and for being the only Dad I had, a fun dad, a loving dad.
