John Yamamoto Obituary

Dr. John K. Yamamoto, Jr. March 22, 1939 - January 5, 2018 Bonita, CA Dr. John K. Yamamoto, Jr., 78, passed away on January 5th, 2018, in Scripps-Mercy Hospital. Dr. Yamamoto lived his life full of grace and compassion. He was constantly surrounded by family and friends. In 1957, when John graduated from Chula Vista High School, he and his good friend decided to go forth and see the world, so they pooled their funds, hopped in a car for an adventure, and made it as far as San Francisco before they ran out of money, and had to return home. In 1959, John was drafted into the United States Army, and proudly if somewhat fearfully, served his country while being sent off to the exotic locales of Fort Sill, OK, and Fort Lewis, WA. It was in 1962 while stationed in Fort Lewis, WA, where he met the love of his life, "His Gal," his future wife of 53 years, Amy Sanbo. At the time of their meeting, Amy was attending classes at the University of Washington, and she was involved with a young man from Hong Kong. One of John's favorite stories is how he managed to steal Amy away from this young man, named Bruce Lee. At the end of his enlistment, John returned home and enrolled in classes at San Diego college. It was during this time, that John and Amy married, the date was December 31st, 1964. Eventually, John transferred to SDSU, the same institution where his legendary father John K. (The Yokohama Express) Yamamoto Sr. lettered in three sports. While attending SDSU, John applied for dental school, and was accepted to Case Western Reserve, in Cleveland, OH. So, in 1967 John and Amy packed everything they owned inside an early 60s Porsche and made the move from San Diego to Cleveland. 1967 was a good year for John. He was doing very well in his classes, he was at the top of the list grade-wise, then in 1968, John and Amy welcomed their first child Lisa into the world, and the world and his GPA has not been the same since. To make ends meet, John took on two jobs working in hospital labs in and around Cleveland. Some of his duties, were orally pipetting urine samples, which although gave him very foul breath, was responsible for him having an immune system that kept him from having to take a sick day until 1985. In 1971, John, now Dr. Yamamoto, graduated from dental school, and returned to Chula Vista to begin his practice. John practiced his brand of dentistry in Chula Vista for 44 years, had thousands of patients who loved him, and they gave him the nickname "DR. Painless." In 1973, two momentous occasions occurred in the lives of John and Amy, first their son David was born, and secondly, they purchased their home in Bonita where they lived together until his death. In 1974, John was one of the co-founders of the United Asian American Council (UAAC). The primary focus of the UAAC, was to combat the growing trend of drug abuse within the Japanese community. It was during this time, that John discovered Kendo, a martial art which would define his way of life for the next 44 years. In later years, John, now known as Sensei, co-founded San Diego Kendo Bu, and taught there as head instructor for more than 20 years. He also founded and was the driving force of UCSD's own Kendo team, a team that went on to beat Harvard at Nationals on multiple occasions. John Yamamoto was a renaissance man, he was an admired husband, father and grandfather, a successful dentist, a talented artist, a gifted musician, a world renowned martial artist who held a Black Belt in not one but two separate martial arts, a professional rock climber, an avid fly fisherman and kayaker. He coached Little League Baseball, held board positions in dance companies, he studied ballet and performed in dance concerts, he played the guitar, the ukulele, the oboe, and he did so much more. John was a dentist that dreamed of being a farmer like his dad. He realized his dream, last year when he bought some goats. He loved those goats, you could often find him sitting in the back yard, next to a fire, sitting there contentedly with a smile on his face, a goat in his lap, and his dog by his side. John was a man of many talents, and titles. He was known as Dad, Grandpa, Sensei, DR. Painless, and so many others, he was a man known and loved by thousands. John is survived, by his wife of 53 years Amy, his children Lisa and David, three grandchildren, and hundreds of students that are also his family. He is loved and will be missed by all of them.

Hey Dad, I miss you more than I can say. Its been a while since I last posted, but my family knows how much of an impact that our loss of you has had on me. You and I know how close we were such that we spoke volumes with a single glance cast at each other. Practically the same person.
Dad remember when I gave you my first medal for Archery when I shot for UCSD at the States? I have another one for you - a National gold. Do I regret asking for a Kendo Do versus a bow for my graduation present from UCSD? No. I had to go through this progression in this very way so that I could be a physician. When I come to the line at a meet, I say, "Lets go Dad." I wish you could have really shot with me like you did with David when he was young, but somehow I think you are always there. David is back shooting again and I am so pleased. I am hoping he will take the west and I will take the east, then we will shoot internationally.

I read some of the comments from people continuing to post to your site. I really appreciate their comments as their memory keeps you alive. Yes, Janet. I did the same thing too when I went to my new dentist - I cried. I try to replicate the same "provider" impact with all of my patients too. Yep he inspires me to always take the extra step.

Thank you all for posting on this Memory site for my Dad.

I still miss Dr. Yamamoto!
I did eventually find a new dentist. During my first visit to my new dentist, being in the chair, feeling and hearing the usual doings of teeth cleaning, etc...it brought memories of John flooding in...his kindness, gentleness, sense of humor and love of life...resulting in tears rolling down my cheeks! My new dentist asked if I was alright...I responded yes, that being in the dentist chair brought memories of my former dentist and that I missed him very much! He said, WOW, I hope my patients feel that way about me...
I smiled...knowing in my heart that most likely wasn´t possible. I do have a very good new dentist...but it´s just not the same as my experience with Dr. Yamamoto.

John influenced my my direction more than anyone knows. I looked up to him and admired him for the person he was. He really helped me, and lighted the way, making me realize things that I should have known. If not for him, I would not have met and married my wife...everything would have changed....and Amy, you were the sweetest and kindest person. I miss John and you too.
All my best, take care. Jim

Hi Dad. Miss you. My mind replays all the memories of the things we did together...how you played tennis with me every night to prepare me for my varsity tennis tryout...our kendo practices...our nightly rock climbing routine after work....you teaching me how to hit the baseball, pitching balls to me between game days....our short sessions playing the guitar...our travels to the Sierras to camp and flyfish.....my first summer with you alone when I was 8, spending each day with you at the office, getting to know you.....

I've had time to think about the distance that grew between us at the end...I'm sorry we did not have more time....more time to talk and makes things right, and perhaps do things together again.

I remember you everyday in my activities with my with my kids....with my son Jacob, teaching him to throw and hit the ball...to cast a fly into the river...to climb the mountain to Lamarck. In the same ways you encouraged me, I help Jacob and Maddie to feel right with themselves when they fail at things, reassuring them that the frustration is just part of the process, and to keep going. I teach them to be gentle, strong and steadfast but kind and caring, as you were....I savor each day with my kids, and I'm thankful you taught me to be a good parent. I tell stories to them often about you and they are amazed and feel good in themselves, warmed that you are nearby in the stories (thats my Jichan!). When I show them the flies I tied on my vice you gave me years ago, I tell them this was your nightly passion and show them the library of ones you tied. And so you continue to live in them.....

As always, there is more to say. But for this space here I will just say that I miss and love you Dad.

John was my "big brother" in dental school at CWRU. I looked up to him and he was always there to give me good advice. He helped get employed at the hospital so that I could manage and pay for my expenses. I am so saddened by this great lost to his family, community, patients, and to me.

Dr. Yamamoto will be missed. Wonderful Man that always spoke so fondly of his Wife, Children and Grandchildren while chit chatting with him in the Dentists chair. He was our Family's Dentist for over 25 years.

Miss you every day Dad. I have plenty of memories. One of them was when you hooded me when I graduated from Medical School and I moved from Navy Reserves to Active Duty that same day. You wore the cap and gown in 90 degree weather in San Francisco. Whew we were all having heat stroke. I remember my last audition with Joffrey Ballet in N Hollywood. What an awesome day. All of those countless hours of driving me to lessons culminated to a day of sheer joy as we got the scholarship for the trainee program. So many memories. Even the simple ones watching Friday night boxing, feeding the goats, kendo practice, bike riding and crashing down the Strand, and Soup Plantation. Thanks for those and other memories I carry with me everywhere. Mom misses you desperately.

I miss you so much, grandpa. I wish I had spent more time with you. I wish a lot of things that will never come to pass. Then again, I would still feel this way even if I spent every hour of every day with you. I love you.

I'll always remember John. All through school he always had a smile on his face and was always kind and friendly to everyone. We attended school in Chula Vista and graduated in the class of 1957 from Chula Vista High School. I just saw John at our 50th High School Reunion in Bonita this last summer. He looked so good and still had that same friendly smile that he always had. You were such a good guy and we will miss you. My condolences to his family. We have all lost a lot but our loss is heaven's gain. Rest in peace, John.

I want to let John's family know that my thoughts and condolences are with them.
The life tribute was an excellent summary of a life well lived.

John became my dentist in the mid 70s when a co-worker at Rohr recommended him.
I looked forward to going to the dentist, with John's compassionate approach to dentistry.

In addition to providing exceptional dental care, John always shared his wisdom about life with me and it was greatly appreciated.
Not many people that we meet in this life leave a lasting and positive impression. Thankfully, John was one who did.

Dr Yamamoto has been my dentist since the 70's, he made each visit a pleasure and learning experience. I truly enjoyed having to go to the dentist imagine that? He was man with integrity and a gifted soul.

I usually saw him twice a year , but each time we would pick up our conversation from the last time like old friends. I trusted him wholeheartedly and wish other doctors were like him.

My heart felt condolences to the family and office staff
