Matthew Hicks Obituary

HICKS, MATTHEW TRENT AC2 (AW/SW) Matthew T. Hicks, U.S. Navy, passed peacefully into the hands of his Heavenly Father, due to an AVM (Arterial Venus Malformation) on Monday, June 16, 2008. Born in San Diego, California, to Tracy and Vera Hicks in November 1982, Matthew graduated from Kearny High School in 2000. His love of baseball began in Little League and lasted beyond High School Varsity. He was a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 278 at Peace Lutheran Church. He had a great love for life and all its challenges. Matthew joined the Navy in January 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed his tour on USS PELELIU LHA 5. He had great pride in his job as an Air Traffic Controller. Matthew's greatest joy in life was his son, Matthew T. Hicks II. He would spend every spare moment with him. Seeing the two of them together was a real joy to anyone. Matthew is survived by his son Matthew T. Hicks II (Mom Jennifer); parents Tracy and Vera Hicks; brothers Tracy III (wife Nuccia), Phillip (wife Kara) and Patrick; nephews Darren Lyman and Tracy Hicks IV; nieces Katelyn Hicks and Angelina Hicks; and fiancee Brittney Swartwout. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2nd at St. Columba Catholic Church, 3327 Glencolumn Dr., San Diego. Burial at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery to follow.

Dearest Vera and Tracy,
Many years have passed since your beautiful son has passed. It doesn´t get any easier. I think of your family often and holding those little twins in my arms when they were first born. I still have the picture you took of the 3 of us!
I wish you the best and lots of happiness with your family.
All my love, Rita Libbon Romero

To the entire hicks family, I know what a great person Matt was. He was the little brother that our family always wanted. I can't even begin to imagine what you all deal with on a daily basis, but please know that Matt had an impact on everyone who knew him. Continue to live and love and support eachother. You all are an inspiration to us. Thank you for sharing your Matt with the world. Kendra has so many great memories of her time over at your house, he will never be forgotten.

Matt, you are missed dearly, there isn't a day that goes by that i don't think about you. As i visit you every monday i try to keep you up to date on the family. I sit there on your grass and carry on a conversation with you about the weeks past and all the fond memories that we shared together, i can't help to be sadened about your passing. The life you were cheated out of, and the fact that your son will grow up with only memories of you. Lil matt was over the other day and it was late, he was tired and all he would say was " i want my daddy" that hit me hard!!! Matt little bro, i will miss you and i Love you always and forever. I only wish that i could have been there by your side to try to comfort you in your time of need. We shall be reunited some time in the future, until then lil bro take care, i love you.

First off I would like to offer my condolences to the Hicks Family. I was stationed on the USS Peleliu with Matt until I departed at the end of 2006. We always had good times, joking and laughing together. He helped me maintain a positive attitude even during hard times out there. We kept in contact even after I transferred. I'm in Rota, Spain now and we continued to email each other about the current events and situations in our lives. Matt was a great guy and will forever be remembered by everyone who has ever had the priviledge of knowing him. I'm very touched by his passing but will remain positive because that is the way that he lived his life. R.I.P. Matthew Hicks.

I remember the very first time I met Matt. I was at Ray A. Kroc Middle school and I was playing football during lunch and Matt decded one day to join in on the fun and he actually was on my team. I remember winning that daywith Matt and when school was over I went and met his parents for the very first time and what was so funny is that I got his older brothers mixed up so many times I lost count although, Matt being the way he was kept the count. Matt ended up being my very best friend and I his as well. I have known Matt what was comming on 14 years to me Matt was more than a friend but the brother I never had whenever I felt I couldn't do something Matt said diffrent and helped me to be the best at anything I went for and for that is something everyone should have in their lives. Matt also set the standard on being an outstanding dad he loved his said very much I can only hope one day I will be as great a dad as he was to his son. I will miss Matt with every breath I take and hope that one day I will see him again. Rest in Peace my dear friend and let your happiness shine down on all of us always your best friend, Massimo

Tracy and Vera the loss of Matthew will forever be a missing link in your family matrix but he will live on through Matthew II and his memories are forever etched in your souls. He is in heaven and enriched in Gods glory that we all eventually long for some of us sooner which is hard to fathom. The gates of heaven embraced Matthew and the angels rejoiced in his returning home. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Tracy Jr I know this is also a extreme difficult time for you and your brothers. Treasure your time with your families and look to the stars as Matthew will alway be a star burning bright. Tracy and Vera thank you for your strength and encouragement during our own family tragedy in 2005 and I hope we can be there for you as well. Love, Wendy Eastman
