Mildred Phelps Cassan February 26, 1921 - April 30, 2016 Carlsbad Millie passed away peacefully in her home at Carlsbad by the Sea in Carlsbad, California. She was born in Scranton, Arkansas to Ellis Powell Phelps and Emma Bell Johnson. She was the youngest of five children. Preceded in death by two sisters, Clair Phelps and Elenora Phelps Sabatka and two brothers, Henry and Woodrow who died in 1913 of an unknown illness. Also preceded in death is a niece, Tony Diane Sabatka and Millie's husband, John Jack' Cassan. Millie is survived by her cousin Danny Meadows of Muldrow, Oklahoma, cousin Martha Crossland of Corpus Christi, Texas, nieces Carolyn Jones and Vickie Znorski, and great niece, Linsey Bosnich Stem, and great nephew, Todd Bosnich. She is also survived by countless friends who loved her dearly.Millie had a warm and loving heart and a smile that lit up the room and left a lasting impression on whomever she met. Millie was not one to boast. There are things she didn't share, such as she was valedictorian at her high school and was offered two full four year scholarships, one to the College of the Ozarks in Clarkville, Arkansas and the other to Harding College in Sceary, Arkansas. Millie decided to go to work for AT&T in their advertising department. She then transferred to Los Angeles to be closer to her sister, Elenora, who was a nurse in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego. Millie transferred to Oceanside, California and worked at the telephone company downtown. While walking to work after lunch one day, unbeknownst to Millie, a young man followed her and knew he had to meet her. Through a friend he knew at the telephone company, he managed to meet her. This handsome young man was Jack Cassan and he and Millie were married within two months. Millie became the office manager at their business, J.F. Cassan Auto Wrecking in Oceanside. They spent their lives supporting one another. Millie was an active member of El Camino Country Club and loved playing golf with her buddies. She was also a member of the Oceanside Emblem Club and an active member of North Coast United Methodist Church in Oceanside. After Jack died, Millie moved to Carlsbad by the Sea and enjoyed independent living until it became necessary that she needed more care. She moved to a lovely room in the Care Unit. She received excellent nursing care and equally as important was the personal warmth and love that was shown to her by the entire staff. They made her comfortable and treated her like extended family.April 30, 2016 marks the end of a beautiful, strong, independent, hard-working, adventurous and loving woman's life. Millie used to say "You go when the Lord calls you." The Lord called her and she went peacefully. Millie would sometimes say "I don't know why I am still here?" The answer from all who loved her would be, you are here to teach us patience, tolerance, positive attitudes, to be non judgmental and to enjoy each day that we are given.A quote from Albert Pine seems appropriate for Millie: "What we do for ourselves passes with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal."Thank you Millie for being here for 95 years. When we think of your smile, our hearts will smile. There will be a Memorial at Carlsbad by the Sea, 2855 Carlsbad Blvd. 92008. It will be held at 1:30pm on Friday, May 20, 2016
