Patrick Sullivan Obituary

Patrick Joseph Sullivan, 42, of San Diego passed away on October 27, 2022. Patrick was born on April 15, 1980 in McAllen, TX. He spent his formative years in Tulsa, OK and Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Patrick graduated from Torrey Pines high school in San Diego, CA in 1998. After graduation, Patrick pursued a degree in Political Science at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. He began his career with Arena Fuels in San Diego and then spent five years with 7-11 Corporation. He spent the last 10 years working for Menifee Fuels where he managed the family business of convenience stores, gas stations, and car washes. Having met his future wife in college, Patrick married Courtney in 2007. They later welcomed their daughter, Abby Lynne, in 2010.

At the age of 37, Patrick was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He battled through several rounds of radiation, 35 days straight of 24/7 chemotherapy and four separate surgeries. Two years later, Patrick was cancer free.
After winning his battle with cancer, Patrick dedicated his time and energy to raising money for the American Cancer Society. Through his efforts, Patrick helped raise thousands of dollars to be put towards cancer research. This year Patrick was recognized by the American Cancer Society as the Inspiration of Life Honoree and was asked to give a speech. His speech was sincere, humorous, and showed his tremendous support of ACS. His commitment to charity was not limited to the American Cancer Society. Patrick also devoted his time to raising money for Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic disorder that affects the skin. Patrick was truly passionate about helping others, and it showed.
Patrick was an absolute one of a kind. He was incredibly quick-witted and known for his sense of humor and propensity for pranks. He was also an outstanding chef, a talented musician, an aspiring golfer, a huge Padres fan, and a Lego enthusiast. Patrick re-discovered Lego during his battle with cancer. He built many intricate pieces and attended numerous Lego conventions. He even had rooms at his home and office dedicated to all of his Lego builds. Patrick also used his Lego skills to build a mosaic to raise money for EB Research. Not only was Patrick a talented musician, but he was also an avid concertgoer. He attended the Ohana Festival annually and had an affinity for Pearl Jam. He went to more than 50 Pearl Jam shows and has the posters to prove it. Patrick was a family man, a loyal friend, and most importantly, a loving father to Abby Lynne. His favorite activity of all was taking Abby Lynne on her YMCA Adventure Guides father/daughter camping trips. Patrick took an active leadership role as the CFO of "Coyote Nation," and earned the nickname of "The Tie-Dye Guy" due to his persistent attempts to wear nothing but tie-dye. Patrick also took on the role of the "Dreamcatcher," which allowed him to raise funds for families who could not afford to participate in the program. He cherished the memories that were made with Abby Lynne and wanted to provide the same opportunity to others.

Patrick loved fiercely and deeply, and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by a loving family: his wife Courtney and their daughter Abby Lynne; Father, Kevin Sullivan; Mother, Karen Sullivan; Sister, Meghan Cate; Brother, Rory Sullivan; and numerous Uncles, Aunts, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Santaluz Club, 8293 Caminito Santaluz East, San Diego, CA (Google Maps) on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the YMCA Adventure Guides or to the American Cancer Society on Pat's behalf.

Patrick was like an older brother to me. We met through my dad, who suggested that Patrick contact me about guitar lessons when his daughter began to show interest. Meeting him felt like reuniting with a friend I´d known for years- we bonded over music and quoting movies, and despite being 12 years apart, we could share similar stories from our times as students at Torrey Pines High and as grocery baggers at the Del Mar Vons. I´d see him on a weekly basis when he´d bring Abby to my studio for her lesson. The hour I got to spend with them each week was never enough. Through Abby´s lessons alone, I could see how much Patrick adored his daughter, and how proud she made him. He was a loving father, a generous friend and a truly kindhearted individual. I miss him very much.
