Ray Vernoy was an inspiration and mentor to all who knew him especially the students and staff at HPHS. Some of my fondest memories were watching Ray coach his football teams on Friday nights. He was a great coach and gentleman.
My sincere condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathies to the Vernoy family. I have very fond HPHS memories of Coach Vernoy. It makes sense that Coach was a Marine. Years after HP I met and married Marilyn Novakoff. The Novakoff family were neighbors and friends of both Coach Vernoy and Coach Springer.

Coach Vernoy was truly an inspiration to not only to his athletes but students too. He provided leadership at the school during some turbulent times in our history. He was not only a great man but an outstanding coach. I can still remember the 56-6 win over Reseda High School for the LA City Championship in 1959.

It is with a very heavy heart that I send this message. I would first like to send my deepest sympathy to the entire family both the immediate and Spartan. I will always consider Coach V in my family! Only a family member would go out of ther way to help you become the person they believe you can be, Coach spent many long hours with me not only discussing football but his philosophy for life. I have a father but It sure helped having a second! He was stearn but fair, strict but caring.Coach gave you enough rope to danggle your feet but I never hung myself, thanks to him. Coach craeted a pretty good ball player and an even better man, which in many instances I cherish more. I have had a love for two men in my life and now one is gone. I will be eternally grateful for the teachings of one Raymond Vernoy.God Bless you and thanks!

My heart felt sorrow for the Vernoy family. What a great legacy Coach Vernoy left. I had the opportunity to play for Coach Vernoy and I always appreciated his ability to teach the game. He taught hard nosed football with a spirit of fairness. His life and legacy will be remembered. I will always be thankful for having you as a teacher and a coach....City Champs 1959

It's with saddness of heart I write these words. My last 3 years at H.P. I played varsity football and what a wonderful 3 years they were. Thats because of the coaches we had them. Rhea and Vernoy. They taught the little things that were needed to be known. Coach Vernoy looked after me because I had no football skills. Go Spartans. W/57. Bob

I very much enjoyed visiting with the Coach at the HPHS Reunion picnics. Unfortunately girls in 1962-65 didn't usually have the opportunity to know the "coaches". We sure missed out.

In 1958 I was an incoming freshman at HPHS. I was personally introduced to Coach Vernoy by the then principle, Mr. Stuart Stingle, as a "special needs" student who would require an individual phys ed routine. Coach Vernoy, in his quiet voice, said to me, all you "need" is 2 laps around the track and follow that with sit-ups and push-ups. Thank you Ray, that's exactly what I needed. That discipline has lasted me a lifetime.

Ray Vernoy was not only my high school football coach, but a family friend. Ray influenced many of my life decisions in a positive way. My thoughts are with his family.

God's speed, Commander.

To the family of Coach Vernoy. During the time I spent playing football at Huntington Park High School, Coach Vernoy, as we called him, was the backfield coach. He was as solid as they come from the standpoint of class, helpfulness, and caring. Until now, I didn't know of the distinguished career he spent in the service of his country and the fact that he was a commander in the Navy and served in the Marines. As I remember back, it really fits the coach. He will always be remembered for the lives that he touched.

Coach Vernoy lived on the next block and Coach Springer lived across the street from me in Downey and being an alumni of HPHS (1963)I was able to know both of these men off the football field, as loving fathers and husbands who loved their families and enjoyed life. My condolences to the Vernoy family.

My condolences go out to Coach Vernoy's family in this time of sadness. I feel very honored to have known and played for Coach Vernoy all through my time at HPHS including being an active member of the 1959 City Championship team he coached. Coach Vernoy will be missed by all of us as he left his mark helping us all grow up to become successful members of society and fathers to our children by his examples and teachings.

My condolences to the family of Coach Vernoy. He was very respected as a person coach and US Navy officer. He and Coach Springer were the best of friends and I remember the HPHS Letterman's Club initiation at his house in Downey. Also the two of them drove me home after having my collarboae set at the emergency hospital near the high school after football practice in 1956. He was also Executive Officer then Commanding Officer at our reserve unit in Huntington Park.
