Stephen Stephenson Obituary

Stephen ("Steve") Anthony Stephenson passed away on August 5, 2023 in San Diego, CA. Steve is survived by Gayle Brotherton Stephenson, his wife of 48 years; his brother, Gary Stephenson; three children (Debbie Stephenson Rodriguez, William Stephenson and Jill Stephenson Valentine); and eight grandchildren. Steve was predeceased by his brother, Doug Stephenson, as well as a daughter, Katie Stephenson Ahern.

Steve was born on September 30, 1937 to Alice and Eugene Stephenson. Steve attended Point Loma High School and went on to graduate from California Maritime Academy in 1958 with an emphasis in Engineering.

After college, Steve became a maritime engineer in the merchant marines and then a lieutenant in the US Navy. When he completed his naval service, Steve returned to San Diego where he engaged in engineering at Solar Aeronautics, stockbrokerage at Shearson Hammill, and thereafter became involved in business investing and counseling. During his career, Steve was an ardent advocate for the revitalization of the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. This included moving his office into the area in the early 1980s when few other professional firms were doing so, and becoming involved in the development of the Horton Grand Hotel.

In retirement, Steve and Gayle spent time with family and took many trips with their closest friends. Steve will be remembered for his kindness toward friends, big hugs and unique personality.
