Thomas Nettles Obituary

Tom Nettles always looked at challenges as opportunities. From his days as an undersized youth on the St. Patrick's School playground teams in North Park, to a career of playing multiple sports, Nettles was a star.Tom was born at Mercy Hospital in San Diego and passed away at Sharp Hospital after a long illness.Nettles got his start playing second base in the Mike Morrow Little League at Morley Field in Balboa Park. There were years of membership in the Junior Golf Association at Balboa Municipal, where Tom earned his share of trophies. He played competitive high school golf at Hoover High, often barefoot, and usually was the team's low scorer.Tom had played basketball at St. Augustine High and transferred to Hoover as a senior, becoming a starting point guard on the annually powerful team coached by the legendary Charlie Hampton, who also mentored Tom in the San Diego City College program.Intrepid and confident, Tom continued to play golf and found another sport. He picked up a javelin for the first time and competed for San Diego City College. Tom was also on championship teams in the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club's Over-the-Line tournaments.Tom served as a president of the Sigma Chi fraternity at San Diego State, played on the golf team, and graduated in 1969, majoring in social science and physical education. He also decided to turn out for coach Don Coryell's football squad during the 1966-68 era in which the Aztecs posted a record of 30-1-1. Nettles had never played more than neighborhood flag or touch football. His foray on the gridiron produced some stunning results.Tom caught 62 passes for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns and set a national collegiate record of 36 receiving yards in a 68-7 win over a Southern Mississippi team that had battled legendary Bear Bryant's powerful Alabama in a three point loss the week before.Tom was selected by the American Football League Kansas City Chiefs in the seventh round on 1969 and played two seasons in the Canadian Football League for the Edmonton Eskimos.Tom was a touring golf professional and qualified for the U.S. Open in 1975. He also taught geography and physical education and helped coach football and soccer teams at San Diego City College. It was during this time that Nettles embarked on a career in broadcasting at San Diego radio stations KOGO and KPRI. He was a color commentator on Aztec football radio broadcasts with KOGO's Ron Reina from 1974-1980. Tom moved to San Francisco and was a sports anchor for KRON Channel 4, the nations' sixth largest television market, from 1981-87.After a couple of years at KTTV Channel 11 in Los Angeles, Tom was named executive director of the San Diego Hall of Champions sports museum in 1993.Tom was inducted into the Aztec's Hall of Fame in 1993, and he also worked as a reporter and anchor for the Golf Channel for 10 years.Thomas Wayne Nettles is survived by his sister, Terry Meaney (Michael), and brother, Pat Nettles, and nieces Corey and Meagan, and nephews Thomas, Patrick, Jack, and John.A celebration of life is planned later. Please sign the Guest Book online at obituaries.sandiegouniontribune.com

I remember Tom during his 2 year stint (1969-1970) with the Edmonton Eskimos. He was an excellent wide receiver & was once quoted as saying "If I can touch the football, I will catch it." So sorry to hear of his passing. Reading his obituary, it's clear that he accomplished whatever he sought in his life.

Tom and I spent a lot of time together in South Mission Beach. He was a good friend. I moved east but on one of my visits back, I spent some time catching up with him. Will always think of him fondly

Tom was the talented and rather impish younger brother of my McKinnley and St. Patricks School Classmate his older brother John. Tom played on the 1957 St. Patrick's Catholic School flag football team championship team played in Balboa Stadium. I was one of the cheerleaders only because I had a loud voice. I did enjoy following Tom's success. To me he will always be that kid with a twinkle in is eye.

I remember Tom well. I went to St. Patrick's School with him. He was a grade behind me and his brother John was in my class. Tom was one of those "active" boys that drove our dear nuns crazy. Tom always had an impish look in his eye like he was about to do something that maybe he shouldn't. In the fall of 1957 he played (flag) on the SPS (flag) football team that won the Catholic School Championship. The game was played in Balboa Stadium. I was one of the school cheerleaders - only because I had a loud voice. I followed Tom's career in the sports section and would brag to my husband that I went to school with Tom when we saw him on the golf channel. Rest in Peace Tom and thanks for the memories.

I knew Tom in the 70s-80s, sad to hear of his loss. What illness was he suffering from?

Tommy was one of my varsity football coaches when I was a senior at Patrict Henry high school in San Carlos in 1969. He was a great guy, and he really made a lasting impression on me. He was a fantastic athlete. My condolences to his family.

Tom and I were Sigma Chi fraternity brothers at SD State and had a political Science class together that I enjoyed listening to Tom debate our professor John Hobbes on various subjects. He was at the Rounder's Room bar at the Campus Chuck Wagon restaurant the night Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. He bolted across the room to watch the TV screen in abject horror! We met up a couple more times once at Mike Specht's house. I asked him how his golf game was going and he said," I gave up the sticks!" asked why, he said that he could not get any better than he was at. Met him again at Sigma Chi brother Dave Thornton's house for poker and he was a very changed man after returning from Florida. His health was turning against this very athletic man and eroding his total being. Tom was still very strong in his opinions and a great person to share time together. May he rest in God's loving arms in The Chapter Eternal. In Hoc, Tom Denhart

I met Tom at Imperial House several years ago. He was always so kind to me.
I enjoyed many dinners and conversation with Tom sitting at the Imperial House Bar. I loved hearing his "sports" stories. Tom and I had very different opinions on religion and politics which resulted in "colorful" conversation to say the least!
My sincere condolences to the Nettles family.

I´m so sorry to learn of Tommy´s passing although I knew he had been enduring health challenges for some time. I met him through his brother John; Big and Tom even lived in an adjacent condo for a while so Mike (Curren) and I got to enjoy them quite often. What a duo. I miss them both and send sincere condolences to the family.

What an athlete he was...Years ago I played golf with Tom and Big Net (Tom´s brother John) at Balboa....he shot 29 on the front nine...then cruised to a 34 on the back...Coming close to the course record...Never saw a 63 shot so easily....Super friendly guy and it was a day I´ll never forget....R.I.P.

I lived on Grimm Street 1 block south of Tom's family. The entire Nettles family were truly remarkable people. We attended St Patrick's together. I remember lots of North Park fun and good times. Tom is a good part of those very happy times.
