I just read of Dr. Lucas' passing in the UCSD Alumni Magazine. My condolences to his family. I met Dr. Lucas in 1972 as a freshman medical student at UCSD and he was the main reason I went into Obstetrics and Gynecology. To see the kndness and compassion with which he treated his often deperately ill patients and to see the regard in which he was held by patients, other physicians, and staff has been an inspiration to me thoroughout my career in medicine. He may be gone but his influence remains.

Dear Mary Lou,
Mary Davis clipped the obituary for Bill from the San Diego U-T and shared it with me.
Mary Davis, Mary Mosson, and I (Faye Williams daughter) are the remaining members of the Navy Doctors Wives Book Club. We meet for lunch monthly at the retirement home/assisted living residence for Mary Davis to continue our connection. She is 93. The home is near where I live, so I see her more often, but Mary Mosson (96) drives from La Jolla with another club "add-on". I often tell people that I have a 96 year-old friend who drives Meals on Wheels to old people. I had been taking my mother to Book Club when it started being held at M.C.R.D. instead of the members homes since it was a long drive for Mom from El Cajon, and they made me an "official" member. Mom died 7 years ago.
Another club member we see occasionally (Kathryn Van Dyke) is 102 and we went to her 100th birthday celebration at the S.D. Yacht Club for that event.
We saw Kathryn at the memorial service at the Submarine Base for Ralph Faucett (97) who had married his wife Betty's niece (a flower girl at their wedding). Betty had started the book club and had died of Alzheimer's. Betty and Ralph had hosted the book club Christmas celebration luncheon at the Town and Country Hotel for members and spouses and continued the tradition as the numbers dwindled.
I remember seeing you last at your home in La Jolla. You mentioned being busy with the work on Bill's sailboat.
The obituary written by your children was an exceptional tribute to an exceptional father and mother.
Mary Davis told me that she and Hal had stopped in briefly to see you as they traveled through Oregon some years ago.
I doubt that any of us will be traveling to Oregon at this point, but we would love to hear from you and see you if you ever travel here.

Mary Lou, My sincere sympathy. I remember a couple of good years in the P.I., and a brief encounter in San Diego. Very pleasant memories.

Having practiced OB-GYN for 40 years, I have been exposed to some of the greats and near greats of our specialty. The likes of Bob Israel, Jim Austin, Marco Labudovich, Don Gallup, Jeff Phalen, Bill Roche, Ken Cooke, John Schaffer, and Joe Yon, to mention just a few. There have been others, and then, there was always us who were always legends in our own minds.
My personal picks as the best of the best were Bill Lucas, Bob Brown(aka the RAB), Al Blank, and Rich porch.
I trained under Captain Lucas at San Diego from 1969 to 1972. I think all of us pictured Captain Lucas as sitting at the right hand of the Father. My residency mate was informed on his first night on call that he would be doing a c-setion and would be assisted by Dr. Lucus. After making an emergency head call, he approached the Boss and suggested that it might be wise if he did the surgery and Joel would assist, since he had spent the previous 3 years as a an airwing flight surgeon in the USS Coral Sea. The Captain said," Dr Lench, the job of the first assistant is to keep the primary surgeon out trouble. I feel confident that I can keep you out of trouble, but I'm not so sure you can do the same for me.""
Captain Lucas was known by many names, mostly behind his back. Super Bill, Captain Marvel, but above it all, he was always THE BOSS. He was the one we had to present the log to each morning, and hopefully ,to successfully defend our actions of the previous evening. THE BOSS didn't expect much.....only perfection!!!
The spector of Super Bill clearing the conference room of all visitors and medical students so he could have a little chat with his residents was more than sobering. There he was, clenching his jaw muscles and clearing his throat repeatedly, muttering phrases like 'meddlesome midwifery' and other catchy sayings.
But above everything, he was always THE BOSS.

Dear Mary Lou and Family, I was so sad to read about Bill's death. I have many wonderful memories of times together with you, Mary Lou. I hope Howard and Bill are talking about tennis now. I am thinking of you.
