Bramwell Anthony Obituary

Dr. Bramwell Anthony Dr. Bramwell Ronald Anthony, 94, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2014, at home with his loved ones. Bram was born in August, 1920, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies. He was the 6th of 7 children born to Lebanese immigrant parents, Girgous and Citra. Bram enjoyed a magical childhood in the tropics, running barefoot and carefree. He attended strict Catholic schools, and was always glad to strip off his starched uniform at the end of the day. His parents both died when Bram was in his teens, and he dropped out of school at 16 to help with the family business. At 23 he decided he wanted to become a doctor, so he left the quiet island life for New York City, where he attended Columbia University, graduating in 3 years. He then attended New York Medical College, followed by his OB/GYN residency at Columbia Hospital for Women in D.C. During this time he met and married Doris Thornton, and they began their family. He served as a Captain in the Army for 2 years, stationed at Fort Jay, Governor's Island in N.Y., delivering military babies. In 1957 he and Doris moved their growing family across country to the tiny town of San Luis Obispo. Bram was the 8th doctor to join the San Luis Medical Clinic, and one of the first certified OB/GYN's in San Luis Obispo, delivering at Mountain View, General Hospital and the old French Hospital. In 1959 a group of 21 doctors pooled $1500 each to obtain a loan to build Sierra Vista Hospital. During these busy years 2 more children were added to the family, for a total of 6. Many an hour at swim meets, and fun at the Yosemite cabin followed. Following a long illness, Doris died in 1982. Bram met and married Debbie Sims in 1988, a nurse assisting him with a surgery. She brought 2 more sons into the mix, and then their own, Megan Citra, was born in 1990. After delivering around 6000 babies Bram ceased his OB practice in 1986, and then completely retired in 1992. He and Debbie have enjoyed many wonderful adventures together. His passion for family, music, his SF Giants, Neil Young, the ocean, and his contagious laughter, are memories for us all to share. He had a way of touching others lives profoundly, yet very simply. Bram is survived by his wife, Debbie; his 9 children, Marilyn Kirkland (Gary), Barbara Tierney (Wayne), Kathy Hesch (Will), Doug Anthony, Andrew Anthony (Cynthia), Tricia Anthony, Evan Sims (Melissa), Nate Sims (Veronica), and Megan Anthony; his 17 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters, Marie and Elaine, of Australia, extended family, and many, many dear friends. Our sincere thanks to Drs. Lori Fletcher, Dan Lewis and his staff, Howard Hayashi, Central Coast Hospice, and our dear friends who walked this path with us. A service will be held Sunday, September 28, 2014, 2pm, at First Presbyterian Church, San Luis Obispo, on the corner of Marsh and Morro. Please honor our number one SF Giants fan, by wearing orange and black. In lieu of flowers, these are two of Bram's favorite organizations: www.doctorswithoutborders.org or www.slosymphony.org. And, as Bram would say, "Don't be so busy making a living, that you forget to have a life." And he, indeed, had a great one. Sign his guestbook at sanluistribune.com/obituaries

I knew a different side of Dr. Anthony. I drove the school bus that picked up and dropped off Megan every day and the one who walked her to and from the bus stop was her Dad. He always had a smile and a happy greeting and would share something funny or interesting in those few minutes I saw him each day. I think of the family so often and want to say HI to Debbie and Megan and let you know I have such fond memories of a wonderful man and father.

I first met Dr. Anthony in 1965 as a very scared young 18-year-old woman preparing for marriage. He always seemed to make his patients feel comfortable and I never felt rushed when talking to him even though there was a waiting room full of others waiting to see him. I remember when he told me he and Debbie were having a baby...Megan was born within a few days of my first granddaughter (second grandchild)...I was a grandmother at 41 and he was becoming a father again at 70. I loved him...he delivered two of my three babies...was in Australia when my second child was born, which he had prepared me for early in my pregnancy. He was a kind, caring, handsome man and I felt so blessed that he was my doctor. I look forward to seeing him in Heaven some day. May God continue to bless his family with comfort, happy memories and the belief in a better place where he is dancing with the angels and reunited with loved ones who have passed before him.

Just a few years ago he still sailed with his son Doug in our local Sunday Ocean Sailboat races. There he was, often at the wheel, competing just as hard as the rest of us-a beautiful sight to see of a beautiful man.

Bram was my obgyn when I first met him..... He performed my hysterectomy and I soon learned what a great person he was!!
I met Debbie in Vocal Arts Ensemble and of course re-met her husband and their daughter, Megan.
We spent many times in their home and felt the warmth and love they had for themselves and everyone'1
They attended church at 'First Presbyterian where I saw them worship!
I know that the Giants played a great part in their lilies and Bram watched every game!!
We will surely miss his smile, good nature and love which he bestowed wherever he and Debbie went!!

Growing up in SLO and the Presbyterian Church with the Anthony family; Dr. Anthony was a large presence in our little town. He was a caring kind OB/GYN and I was disappointed that he retired before I became pregnant. We are thinking about you Tricia, and all of your family.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Bram's death. I loved working at the San Luis Medical Clinic, working with him, and being his patient. His personality was infectious, how could you have a bad day? Later when one of our girls played water polo with Megan, there were many a pasta feeds at their home. He was always at their matches cheering the girls on. Debbie and family, our family's thoughts and prayers are with you all. Stephanie, Jeff, Shannon, Madison, Mackenzie & Conner Allen

Dr. Anthony was a gentleman, and a very patient doctor. As a young, naïve expectant mommy with toxemia in 1980, his calm, direct approach, with those beautiful eyes, conveyed the seriousness of my health situation. I saw Dr. Anthony at a wedding in 2010, and he remembered who I was. His article states that, '...he had a way of touching others lives profoundly, yet very simply.' So true. I believe that Lord has said to him, 'Job well done my good and faithful servant.'
