Gail Wedell Obituary

Gail Wedell, born in 1933 in Osborn, Mo., passed peacefully in her sleep at 1:05 am, on September 20, 2017, at Mission View Health Center in San Luis Obispo. She had been under the care of Wilshire Hospice of San Luis Obispo and the loving care of the staff at Mission View. She was continuously surrounded by her children, grandchildren and all who loved her. Her parents and five siblings moved to San Luis Obispo in 1944, putting down roots in attending local schools and becoming members of the Church of Christ. Gail had four children: Ronald Stanley Best, Randall Edward Best, Russell Curt Best and Roxann Gail Best. She later married Lt. Colonel Harry C. Wedell and together they raised Gail's and Harry's children: Diann Louise Gibson, Cristine Hope Hei, and Mark Warren Wedell. Gail was very active in church and loved to be involved in several "missions" of charity. She knit literally hundreds of hats, baby blankets and scarves for the Arizona Native American people. She was active in T.O.P.S. (take off pounds sensibly) in the Paso Robles area. Harry and Gail also traveled extensively in the U.S. and to the Caribbean Islands. For 30 years they owned a second home in Palm Springs, Calif. and started a Church in their community, which is flourishing today. Gail's greatest sense of pride was in her husband, a retired Marine in the 4th Division and family, including 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, with 1 on the way. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Colonel Harry C.Wedell; two sons: Russell Best and Ronald Best; four siblings: Clinton Johnson, Loren Johnson, Donald Johnson and Louise Schellenger; granddaughter, Heather Phillips; and great-grandson, Shaki Phillips. Gail is survived by five children: Randall Best, Roxann Hanrahan, Cris Hei, Mark Wedell and Diann Gibson; her sister, Evelyn Bovee; her lifetime sister-in- law, Norma Johnson; many grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held at 12:00 noon, with a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 30, 2017, both at Reis Mortuary in San Luis Obispo.
