Gladys Rubinstein Obituary

Gladys Rubinstein Gladys Rubinstein, 91, passed away in San Luis Obispo on June 25, 2015. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. Gladys loved people and always saw the best in everyone she met. She was an excellent cook and gracious hostess. Gladys was both artistic and athletic. She loved to paint landscapes of places she knew. She played tennis, golf, ping pong, bridge, and board games with a competitive zeal. She was born Gladys Finberg in February 1924 in Flint, Michigan, and was the oldest of four children. When she was in third grade, the family moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, where her father Carl sold plumbing fixtures through Finberg Supply, one of the landmark stores in Lawrence during the 1940's and 1950's. Her family had one of the few television sets in the area at that time and there would often be 15-20 people in their living room in the evenings to view this new form of communication. Gladys graduated from Lawrence High School in 1942 and went on to earn an AA degree in business from Boston University. She married Coleman Rosenfield from nearby Haverhill in 1946 and the couple lived initially in Lawrence before moving to the Massachusetts seaport town of Newburyport in 1953. In 1956, the family moved to south Florida where Gladys lived for the next 50 years. She met her second husband, Abe Rubinstein, in Fort Lauderdale and was married to him for 20 years before his death in 2007. Abe and Gladys shared a love of travel and visited many countries, including England and Japan. She and Abe moved to San Luis Obispo in 2003 so they could be closer to family members who lived in California. Gladys is survived by her son, Stan (Elaine) of San Luis Obispo; son, Jim (Diane) of Silver Spring, Maryland; grandsons, Joshua and Ben (Sonia); great-grandchildren: Amedeo, Matteo, and Sara of Silver Spring; cousins, Chuck and Dorothea Gordon of Mountain View, and numerous nieces and nephews. A family celebration of her life was held in San Luis Obispo on June 28. Donations in her name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3232 South Higuera Street, #101-A, San Luis Obispo, Calif., 93401. Sign her guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries

Gladys & my Mom, Rose, lived in Neighborhood 3 at Sydney Creek. On my visits, Gladys would always pat my arm, give me a warm smile and tell me a story about the prettiest girl that lived on her street named Rose. Sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing Gladys with us.

Gladys was an my mother-in-law for 20 years. I enjoyed cooking with her and hearing her laugh. She was a devoted Grammy to my sons, Joshua and Benjamin and was very pleased to be a Great-Grammy. She was beautiful and classy. I know that the Rosenfield family is blessed with wonderful memories to comfort them.
