James Lopes Obituary

James Lopes
May 2, 2021
San Luis Obispo, California - James Frederick Lopes passed away peacefully in his home on May 2, 2021, after a year's-long battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme.
Jamie was born in Delano, CA to Joseph and Marion Lopes on August 12, 1947. Jamie moved to San Luis Obispo (SLO) after graduating from UC Santa Barbara. He was conferred a Master of City and Regional Planning from Cal Poly. He served the community as a city planner and through community outreach to improve the city and county of SLO. Jamie was a member of the SLO United Methodist Church. Jamie was an elegant and learned man who loved to travel, and enjoyed good music, art, food, and wine. His absence will be felt by many.
Jamie was predeceased by his father, Joseph M. Lopes, his mother Marion James Lopes, and his uncle Frederick James. Jamie is lovingly remembered by his cousins, Julie (Jane) Walcott of Apache Junction, AZ, Judy Marcum of Hanford, CA, Berenda (Brian) Fink of Elk Grove, CA, Ronald (Alicia) Wrest, his youngest cousins, (who called him Uncle Jamie) Madeline and Oliver of Hanford, CA, Michael Locke of Auburn, CA, and Rick (Valarie) Lopes of Sacramento, CA. The family held a private graveside service for him.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Teresa Bernick who provided many years of loving care to the Lopes family. They would also like to thank Dr. Brian DiCarlo, Hematology and Oncology and his staff, UCLA Health, his nurse Peggy Sharpe, Always Caring and Central Coast Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate and dedicated service. The family would also like to acknowledge his men's prayer group, his pastors, and his many friends and neighbors who visited, walked with, and cooked for him.

I was shocked to hear about his passing, I worked with Jamie when he was on the Board of Directors at ECOSLO. I will always remember him as warm and caring.

Even many years later if I ran into him from time to time he always remembered me, which just adds to how special a person he was. He cared so much for the community of SLO, it was an honor and great joy to know him.

He'll always be as near as a thought and will watch over those he loved.
